Clark’s Trading Post, a White Mountain Attraction and a family Tradition. The Family Patriarch has passed; we were all saddened when W. Murray Clark left us for the big bear show in the sky a few months back.
Young Murray & Maureen have been putting on the show for the past few years, and one could say they cut their teeth while raising bears. The show must go on and it will with opening day just two weeks away everyone is getting ready.
The 60th Anniversary of the bear show will be celebrated; the bears will be coaxed with vanilla ice cream to perform for the crowds. The Wolfman will chase the train, the bumper boats are all tuned up. The crooked house is just as crooked as it was last season. The train rides, Merlyn’s magic show, the museums, candle shop and the New Segway rides will all be ready to go. But we will all miss Murray’s special way of swinging his bears...and shooting hoops with a beast as big as Shaquille but twice as hairy. My Parents took me the Clark’s when I was about 10, back then I didn’t notice how clean they kept the place, how well mannered the young staff was, or what a great family tradition we had begun to forge. I’ll go back every year whether my son comes with me or not, because no matter how old you are there is something to enjoy about a day at Clark’s.
I’m very lucky to live in the White Mountains, and happy to be in a town that takes its traditions to heart. I hope to see many of you at Clark’s this summer, trust me your family will thank you (maybe not right away but some day).
A Little History of the bear shows.
In 1949, brothers Edward M. and W. Murray Clark started teaching and training bears for show work, a tradition that Clark family members continue to this day. The late W. Murray Clark developed a rapport and understanding of these intelligent animals which he passed on to his children, the current trainers, Maureen and Murray Clark.
“Each performance is unique,” Murray would say. “The weather, dynamics in the den, audience reaction—any number of things can affect the bear’s attention and distract them from the performance.” Truly a tradition among White Mountain vacationers, this entertaining and educational 1/2 hour show is a thrill for all. Unmuzzled and unleashed, the Bears enjoy performing for you in our covered show arena.
