Friday Falcon - Why Risk Getting Hurt Over a Feather?

No, I am not starting a new group!

I took the following photos earlier in the spring but finally got around to posting them.

I found a bird, not just any bird, but a bird of prey, a hawk (not a falcon) perched on a tree out in a distance.

Hawk in Red Lodge - April 2010

This is where my camera's zoom feature comes in handy.  Here's a close-up look at him.

And another close-up of this magnificent bird.

Before I knew it, he was joined by a magpie.  It was suprised that the magpie stood there, on the same tree as the hawk.  I think he was there to taunt him.  I guess he was not afraid to end up as a tasty treat for the falcon.

To my surprise, within a few seconds, there were two magpies teasing the hawk as if they wanted to gang up on the falcon.   The falcon did not seem bothered at all.

Here they all are again a few branches of each other!  Note that both magpies directing their attention towards the hawk.

Here one final photo of this unusual bird encounter.

Hawk and two magpies feet from each other in Red Lodge - April 2010

I was glad to have my camera out and capture the unsual behavior of the magpies.  I learned later when I was visiting the Beartooth Nature Center in Red Lodge that magpiess are not afraid of the hwak and they sometimes make a flight towards the falcon and pull a feather out of the falcon.  What is up with that?   There is courage but for a magpie to try and pull a feather out of a live hawk is more like a death defying stunt.  Why risk getting hurt over a feather?

I am glad there was no casualty when I observed the hawk and the two magpies who decided to join him on the same tree.  I hope you enjoyed the title of this post and the photos of these birds which I spotted in Red Lodge.  Happy Friday!

For a moosely fun group, check out Moose Monday !   :)

Great shots Gerry!! Liked the story of the magpies! Let's hope the Habs have the eyes of the hawk and courage of the Magpies!

Hi Gerry!

That is so cool!  Hawks and Falcons are amazingly beautiful birds...I love watching them while they seem to enjoy soaring through the skies!

Gerry - I'm always so fascinated by the photos you post.  These are no different in that regard!  The Hawk told me his name was, "Hawkeye" - but the Magpies wouldn't say:-)

Nice shots, Gerry!  The birds seem to have their own ways of socializing.

Al and Peggy,

Thank you.  It looks like the Habs will be pulling on the Philadelphia feathers!  Who would have expected a match up between the 7th and 8th ranked teams in the Eastern Conference finals?  Go Habs Go!

William,

I am glad you liked it.   You never know what to expect when you are out observing nature.  I was lucky to snap these photos (mind you, not the best quality after I cropped them) despite being a football fiel away from the action.

Paula,

I had to check online to find the difference between falcons and hawks and make a positive ID for the hawk (I first thaught it was a falcon as you probably guessed from the title of the post).  I agree that it is amazing to see them in flight and soaring through the skies.  :)

Myrl,

I seem to enjoy it when I take photos that would be hard to duplicate on any other day despite returning to the same location.   That is why I feel blessed when I do not only observe the incredible works of Mother Nature but I do get a few snapshots to share with my friends on AR.

Funny you mentioned Hawkeye.   We do have a hawk by that name at the Beartooth Nature Center (BNC).  Unfortunately for the one in captivity, he has loss one eye and could no longer survive in the wild.  But, lucky for him, he is well taken care of at the BNC.

I am surprised the magpies would not tell.   From an earlier post, I thought they were very social birds and they do like to make lots of sounds: Not-So-Wordless Wednesday - Meeting of the Magpies .

Then, again the magpie (named Harry) at the BNC says "No".

Maria,

They sure do.  Please check the link in my comment above (#10) to see some more (and safer) socializing.

Marlene,

Thank you for visiting my post and have a great weekend as well!

Gerry - Your story of all of the friendly Red Lodge birds getting together on a beautiful spring day was very interesting.

Marc,

I am glad you got to read the story and found it interesting.  We had snow a couple of times since then but it looks much more like spring today in Red Lodge!    :)

Tony & Darcy,

Thanks.   I am not sure if it was bravado.  I guess they were not impressed by the size of the hawk and figured they can defend themselves since they outnumbered him.   Whatever the reason, it was quite a scene to observe and photograph.

That is one BIG bird! I thought that maybe the magpies had eggs nearby.

Coming to you from Texas.....

Sussie,

I thought the same thing at first but I did not see any magpie nest and I have been observing the area for many days.

I am totally confused. First you say it's a "hawk (not a falcon)," but then you use hawk and falcon interchangeably throughout the rest of the post. And the magpie is called a meadowlark one time, which also are two different birds. Or is this margarita just making me read terribly wrong today? LOL

Russel,

It one of 3 things.  You are either quite observant or perhaps the margarita is much stronger than anticipated (like twice the normal alcohol content) or perhaps the margarita is much stronger than anticipated (like twice the normal alcohol content).  The last statement can be seen as leaning more towards the margarita.    Thanks for the chuckle!  :)
