I just walked outside my front door with my neighbors and watched the final launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis - the 32nd such launch of this particular space craft. I watched the last launch – Discovery – live from Cocoa Beach – and I find it almost impossible to believe that we are witnessing the end of American manned space flight.

To say we have lost our way would be an understatement in the extreme. It is way more than that.

We have apparently completely forgotten who we are and who we are supposed to be.

Wow, how cool is that? Watching history in the making. I'm sure AR's own John Mayer was watching from the beach in Cocoa Beach. I must pop over to see if he has some photos. Sounds like a great excuse for a neighborhood party. Hope you had fun.

Simon, I am so BUMMED that I never got to watch a launch. We have always wanted to and know it is passing in to history. Now that BUMS me even more. I just can't imagine that we are letting the Russians beat us on this. It is a SAD day! I'm acutually a very positive person but this has totally bummed me out!!

What a beautiful launch it was. I got to see this one from the parking lot at my office. Got to see the last one on the shores of Daytona Beach.

America seems to be headed into a big decline. Killing the space program certainly doesn't help.
