Let's Talk Colon Health!

Sometimes, this seems to be an embarrassing subject to talk about to some. Some are afraid to get a colonoscopy but it's vital to do it because it can save your life.

A friend of ours as we speak is getting chemo treatments once a month for six months. Why? The answer is obvious but let's rewind to 5 months ago...

Our friend was admitted to the hospital with stomach pains. Once in the emergency room, he told the doctor he hadn't pooped for 5 days. Of course he never told his wife this. She found out right there and then. So, he undergoes all the tests and they see that his colon is really clogged. Yep, sounds gross but it is what it is. I used to be on his case when I found out that at 60 years old he never had a colonoscopy. He knew I would be ticked off at him. I never said how I felt but he knows it because he knows me.

They do surgery and discover the cancer. He was riddled with it. They said they think they got most of it but chemo treatments are in order to make sure they get rid of it all. After the first few chemo treatments he was feeling fine. The other day my husband spoke with our friend and he is now feeling the effects of the chemo. He thought it was going to be smooth sailing with treatments.

Please, when you turn 50, get the colonoscopies. It can save your life!

Jackie, about ten years ago, I lost a very dear friend to colon cancer, and he'd never had one.  It's so important, especially if there is any history in your family.

Jackie,

I want to thank you for writing about this subject.  I have one sister who died from this dreaded disease and another sister who is a survivor.

Hi Stacey, I'm sure he will be fine and thank you. Yes, preventative care is always best!

Hi Pat, I'm so sorry about your friend. That is sad. I know if there is a history, you have to get them more often than every 5 years when there is no history. I know some doctors are more diligent about how often.

Hi Richard, I'm so sorry to hear about both your sisters. It's never easy. And you are welcome!

My dad had his first routine one last year at age 70. Found suspicious looking polyps. Did surgery , and yes, it was cancer. His life was saved because it was found so early.

Jackie:  Had an aunt who lost a large section of her colon to cancer.  She was too afraid to go get the test after one year of unpleasant symptoms.  It wasn't until her daughter found out what was going on that she drove her to the doctor and made her get tested.

Such a great public service announcement Jackie. Colon cancer is a highly treatable form of cancer. But only if it's detected early on. Hopefully your friend will come through and be as good as new once his treatment is completed.

Hi Allen, It's great that they can remove the polyps while they are in there. Early detection is the best thing!

Hi Chris Ann, that is sad and I'm sure it was hard on her. I just drove my Mom home from getting her colonoscopy today. Everything is A-OK :)

Hi Craig, Thank you Craig. It's very treatable and no one should die from it. His prognosis is good. He's learned a very valuable lesson I'm sure.

Here goes OVERSHARE! I had my first one after a day with intense cramps that were worse than child labor. The prep is DISGUSTING, the procedure is just fine. The peace of mind was priceless.

Hi Ellie, LOL! You made me laugh :) I know all about the prep. My husband has to get them every 3 years because cancer in of itself runs in his family. He had to do the salt water drink. My Mom had one today and her prep was better. She had to drink some over the counter and I have forgotten what one. Even though it's minty tasting, having to drink a certain amount every 10 minute for hours takes it toll. Still better than the salty stuff. Peace of mind is priceless!
