What You Wear Pales In Comparison To What Do While You Are Wearing It.

Buyers.   With each meeting you bring patience, are dressed professional, have Tide to Go for the white shirt/coffee accidents, breath mints, and whatever else you need to look great while searching for homes.

One Saturday, you are knee deep in playing with the kids or out running errands like crazy or even off doing something with friends.  Whatever it is, you are out and not even thinking about working.

"Hello?" Buyers calling...absolutely insist that we meet at THE house - family wants to see -  they may want to write an offer.   "What do you mean later or "gasp" - the next day?"

I mean - you should see what I am wearing - am miles away from home and even longer from getting dressed up with everything needed.  Later or tomorrow would be better...I say.  But they beg for the "later" option "please hurry - and don't worry about what you are wearing - we don't care."

Doing enough to get there without impactingwhat's already going on and dressed for what's planned afterwards - I'm not dressed up but like the outfit!   During the showing, the Seller happens to be driving by to check on the house.  She was really dressed up with "where did you get those" shoes on! After asking, "May I help you?" she states, "I am the owner - where is your Realtor?"

Ahhhh ... a moment where I am going to have to wear this outfit like I mean it!  "Right here!" Assuring the owner all is well, here is a card, introduce the Buyers and answering all her questions - she finally leaves saying, "Well let's hope you know how to write an offer!"

End of story - both sides closed happily.  Though it is important to look our best, "dress for success" and look professional, there are times that it just isn't going to happen exactly the way we'd like.

What matters more is to focus on who you are and how you carry yourself when these imperfect moments happen.  Happy Tuesday to all!

Clients that you have had for even a little while, hire you for your expertise, NOT what we wear.   I remember delivering popcorn to a family's home, and they wanted to go and see a home, wrote on it, and we listed theirs THAT day.   All while I was wearing SHORTS!   Would not have been my choice!

We are all different..there are buyers/sellers who could relate intially in a more friendly relaxed way if you were in jeans, walking that woodlot, rear back 40 of a farm and not in high heels or too polished. Other times being over dressed or your office being a little too swanky can make the seller feel these guys are making way way too much of me, sellers, etc. Be yourself is the key so you are comfortable..so are others around you.

Gabrielle, your willingness to meet them when the Buyers wanted to more than compensated for your outfit. And you wrote an offer, congrats! I'll bet your Seller is smiling :)

This is a pretty thought-provoking post, Gabrielle.

I know that a lot of people place a high importance on looking their best.

Many people will even prejudge based on that.

As a kid, I remember that I would see groups of kids playing soccer, and they were wearing really nice looking clothes.  I usually wore rags that I didn't care whether I ruined.  Many of these kids would look at me like I'm a three-headed alien.

Then we started playing, and more often than not, I wiped them off the field.  Many of us would be friends for many of our childhood years.  Most of them would never remember what they thought of me when they first saw me in my rags.

The moral of the story is that you don't HAVE to look your best, but you better be REALLY GOOD, if you aren't.

Again, good post!

I dress very casual and sell about 80 houses a year. A good friend in my office ofter doesn't change out of her gym attire and sells over 100 every year. What you wear does not matter as long as you establish your expertise.

Gabrielle, sounds like the seller was satisfied that you knew how to write an offer. Perhaps she wasless pleased when she had to acknowledge the flaws that came up during the inspection? Congrats anyway. as noted above, we can't be perfect all of the time in our dress, but if we are perfect and professional in our knowledge, that shines like a tuxedo/formal gown.

Gabrielle, I agree with you, it's what you say and how you handle yourself when you're wearing those clothes that counts!

Great post.

When I am at my cabin, I often am wearing shorts and a Tee shirt. Neighbors bring friends to my door and want me to show them a cabin. These people accept me as a professional and I have sold several cabins being relaxed. I know you've gone to Open Houses in Hawaii and the agent is wearing shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. It all has to do with location, location, and yes, location and what people deem professional in each locale...
I hope your week is going well Gabs,
Paul

Hi Gabrielle ~ Did she really say that? Yeegads! Funny - after spilling my taco all over myself on tour today my coworker introduced me to the miracle of the Tide To Go pen - I'm a convert!

I think it depends on your market... some areas you would want to "dress the part" and other areas are more laid back.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gabrielle:

I usually wear a suit during the first meeting...

Then it gets casual from there.

Here in this little desert town, we are casual dressers anyway - flip flops are seen alot :)  We spend more money on pedicures than clothes.

Good for you for being a sport and 'pro' reacting.  The most important thing is that you were there when they needed you.
