Wayne, IL is a small community that straddles the DuPage-Kane border. Located just east of St. Charles, the Village of Wayne, IL is a residential community with a population of about 4,000 residents in about 1,100 households. Local residents will sometimes laughingly refer to Wayne as "Waaaaaayyynnnne" in nod to the equestrian heritage and the many property owners who "keep their horses at home".

In the 1860s the Dunham family settled in Wayne, IL and founded Oaklawn Farms for breeding and selling prize Percheron horses which were originally imported from France. Mark Dunham's residence, Oaklawn is now popularly known as Dunham Castle. This turreted estate was built to model the Norman castles that Mark visited in France.

Along the main street of the Village of Wayne, houses were built for local residents who worked at Oaklawn Farms and the local railroad junction. Today the Village and Dunham Castle are listed as historic districts in the National Register of Historic Places.

Today Wayne, IL offers a wide range of houses that appeal to buyers looking for a more relaxed lifestyle that is still just minutes from shopping, dining, and expressways. In the Village, homes are available from $200,000 to about $500,000.

Just about a month ago, I closed on this home at 32W215 Army Trail Road. This 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath home was built by Solomon Dunham in the 1850s. Located on 1 full acre right in the heart of the Village, the new owners have already remodeled the bathroom and made plans for new  gardens. I visited with them this past weekend and am thrilled with their progress.

This darling home at 31W748 Peterson Drive is now available as a bank-owned property for only $299,000. The previous owner remodeled the kitchen, the bathrooms and did some nice updating in this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home. The sunroom on the west side of the home would make a perfect office or guest room and overlooks the gardens.

This 4 bedroom home at 32W480 Derby Road is a great choice for someone who wants a small horse property at a great price of only $560,000. Located on 2 acres just west of the Village, this home has a recently remodeled kitchen plus a master suite addition with a luxury master bath. The barn is all ready for two horses and their owners who want easy trail access to Pratts Wayne Woods.

Outside the Village are the "estate-zoned" properties in Wayne, IL. While many of these properties do, in fact, house luxurious estates, the zoning really refers to the minimum four acres required for each property. Many of these homes have barns, and all offer some of the prettiest properties in the western suburbs. Residents enjoy the peace and privacy of a gracious property complete with mature trees, meandering creeks and gently rolling meadows.

This home represents the best of traditional Wayne. The 6.9 acre property is located on prestigious Surrey Road which is part of the original Dunham Oaklawn Farms. The property features an in-ground pool, tennis court and a charming guest cottage. The home has a luxuriously decorated first floor master suite. Priced at $1,100,000.

Leslie, I want Derby Rd!  I'm a major sucker for yellow houses, and if there's room for a small horse, I'm sure my large dog would really love it.

Waaayyynnneee sounds like a nice community. What's with the addresses?  In California we 22 Main St.  What with the 32W480 ???  I'm assuming the W is for West? So what the 32, and whats the 480?

Jim, I can see this looks odd to you but just for fun I'll try to explain it! The Chicago metro area is layed out on a grid system in 1 mile blocks, starting downtown by the lake at Madison and State. 32Wxxx means your're 32 miles west of that point on a east-west street. 4Nxxx which means you're 4 miles north of the main line on a north-south road. In many of the original communities out here, these numbers are used as "fire numbers" to direct emergency help. There is a certain reverse snobbery of having a fire number rather than a street address...it can mean your home is on a larger piece of land that was built on before a subdivision that got regular streets. It's funny when a big new subdivision uses fire numbers to give the illusion that it is a more traditional higher end community.

But I love your area....I grew up in Mill Valley, and still miss northern California. You are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area.

Patricia, the little yellow house is sold but I think Derby would be perfect for you and your dog. Should I send over the contract by fax or email? :-)

Scott, the green in front of the home on Derby is a woody-stemmed ground cover called euonymus. It's dense, chokes out weeds and stays green almost all year round. Needs to be controlled or it will take over...lawn guys cut it back on the edges with a chain saw a couple of times a year.
