DRIVING ON DAYTONA BEACH

driving on Daytona Beach In Daytona Beach FL, we have the privilege of driving on our beaches. How many places can boast of that? And here's an interesting bit of history: In the early years of Nascar, drag races were actually held directly on the beach.  For more information on Nascar and other interesting Daytona Beach facts, read my post titled Daytona Beach Florida-Vacation and Second Home Destination. This post is also great if you're considering investing in real estate in the Daytona Beach area.

Since the early days of Nascar are long gone, and Daytona Beach has become a hot spot for family vacations, the beach speed limit on Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, and Daytona Beach Shores is now 5-10 mph, for the safety of the beach goers. Also for public safety, beach ramps are closed when the tide gets too high, or the weather too extreme. If rising tides reduce the driving lanes to less than 30 feet, the Beach Patrol will temporarily close the beach to all driving and parking, until conditions improve.

While most people recognize that driving on our beaches is a privilege, and are respectful of the rules, there are always those who don't like to abide by the rules. And for these people the Beach Patrol will issue citations. But I'm sure you're not one of these people. daytona beach fl

If you're not familiar with the Daytona Beach area, you'll be surprised to know that Daytona Beach itself is relatively small. What most people consider to be Daytona Beach is actually several small cities in close proximity to each other. For more information on these different cities, read my post titled Daytona Beach Florida-A Comprehensive Distinction Between the Surrounding Cities

Welcome to Daytona Beach and enjoy driving on our fabulous beaches! Just be careful not to get stuck in the sand! But if you do, there's usually a friendly "local" nearby to help you out.

Lisa I have not been to Daytona Beach in many years, but I LOVE Daytona, and driving on the beaches were one of my favorite things about Daytona beach.  Especially when I was younger and would frequent the area for Spring Break.   You have reminded me we should check out Daytona Again soon, our kids would love that!

Katrina- Well stop by and say "hello" when you're here =)  They've now blocked off certain sections of the beach, so you can't drive all the way through anymore. I'm posting a related blog tomorrow, explaining that situation.  Thank!

Hello Lisa,

I was in Daytona in May and I could not find the beach. i saw the Harley dealer. I am a lover of auto racing and I wanted to really see the place. I saw streets names after Nascar people but no beach. Next time I come by I will ask you for help.

Great Post!  It's been at least 6 yrs since I have been to Daytona.  I am curious to go back as I hear that the Boardwalk area is all changed (or being changed). I love the beach, shopping and the long pier we always did our night fishing.  Unfortunately, I am a workaholic realtor too, and never find time to get to the beach!

Christopher- Sounds like you got a little it distracted. Just drive east until you run out of dry land. :P

Christine- I never go to the beach and I was born here. But that's probably WHY I don't go to the beach. I've seen too many people get skin cancer from the sun.

Lisa, I didn't realize you could drive on the beach!  That could be interesting during spring break I'm sure!  Daytona has NASCAR and a bike (motorcycle) rally every year too, right?!

Lisa...  I actually drove my car on the beach back in 1987 and that same week rented a moped or motorbike and drove it on the beach. But that was also back then when Spring Breaks were big. From what I have heard, Spring Break is basically outlawed now?

Jeff- Geez. In the mid 90's they ran MTV out of town because the wet T-shirt contests, partying, TV games, etc.  were getting out of control. The city was losing the family demographic because of the parties. And underage kids were drinking and jumping off of balconies, among other stupid things.

Every year since then, they've tightened the rules more and more. They've also brought in upscale hotel chains and torn down a lot of the eye sores. The downtown area has been completely renovated as well. And now they've banned all the strip clubs from the Seabreeze area and are in the process of moving them out toward I-95. It's been a slow, uphill battle to clean up the city's image.

wow...the Seabreeze area. Now you are bringing back memories. And I remember some of those pool parties.  ;o)   MTV was just new when I was last down there...new in regards to the fact that they just started doing the Spring Breaks....

Wow!  I didn't realize that Daytona wasn't really the HOT spot for spring-break anymore.  I am so out of touch!  I was never allowed to go to Daytona in the 80's for spring-break.... I guess for good reason!

damn... I just missed you because I was back in 1988... we went to Key West for Spring Break one year and on our way back, came up to Lauderdale and Daytona for 2 days, before heading back...  went to a bar called the Button... I think that is in Lauderdale.

Jeff- When my husband and I were dating, we used to go to the Elbow Room in Lauderdale. I want to point out that this was HIS choice and not mine! =P

Lisa,

Do not get surprised for coming to a blog so much time after it was posted. I googled "driving daytona beach" and it popped up.

Just wanted to say that driving on the beach was way before NASCAR. 50 years earlier, actually. NASCAR started in 1948, and the first offcial race was in 1903, but people were driving here years before.

Jon- I didn't mean to imply that NASCAR was the start of beach driving. I just tied the 2 topics together.
