Book Meme: What You Read Is What You Get!

Believe it or not, I can't even recall the last time I read a book from cover to cover.  I do plenty of reading, just not in the traditional sense these days.  I read countless posts here on AR, digest a bunch of stuff Mortgage-Related in The Scotsman Guide and Broker Magazine.  Yet, what my eyes see and my brain digests far exceeds just the business I'm in.  I love psychology, philosophy, pain, heartache, the loss of God, wisdom, darkness, enlightenment, inspiration, and a whole lot of other stuff that's hard to bring to light in taking a 1003 Application.  I'm a Mortgage Broker by trade, I'm a Humanistic Recluse Idealist by heart.  Somewhere along the line, my soul stirs in all the great words I've read.  If you were to visit my home and do a bit of searching, you'd find plenty of reading material from all facets and subjects in life.  I've digested excerpts from a whole bunch of them.  It's been awhile since I've committed to an actual book though, so I'm working on memory here folks.  The following are my favorite and you can damn bet I'm going to revisit.  Thank you Carole Cohen for your initial post, I almost forgot how rewarding these books can be.

Sorry for the delay, I've been Book Meme'd twice now.  First, it was Carole Cohen.  Then came Sarah Cooper.  So, I shall answer what they asked.  You want my favorite reads of all-time....here we freaking go.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck-  Perseverance is king.  It has been at least 10 years since I've delved into this piece of work, but it needs revisited again.  Steinbeck is a brilliant writer, both ahead and in tune of his time.  The strength of this storyline pales in comparison to the strength of the characters Mr. Steinbeck writes about.  I look back on this book fondly, remembering no matter how bad it may be...true strength is in Spirit, never lose it.

On The Road by Jack Kerouac - I read this book cover to cover in my days in the restaurant business.  At that point, I was searching, for my meaning...for my life.  I'm more like Kerouac than I'd care to admit, though I wish I was on page with his ability to write.  In that context, he's a true icon.  The lifestyle, well, that's probably not the way to go.... but I live it anyway.

The Sky Is Falling by Sidney Sheldon - I finished this book quite quickly on a flight from Allentown to Florida, where I was to meet my parents and celebrate my mother's 50th birthday on a cruise to Mexico.  I know this is fiction, but damn....it hits close to home.  Easy read and a fantastic story, it has all the elements.  To me, this is one of the under-rated reads I never hear about.  Gee, I wonder is Sidney had the Kennedy's in mind when he wrote this?  RIP Sidney.

Stephen King's "A Memoir Of The Craft" by Stephen King of course -  If there is a better writer in my lifetime, I'm not sure who it is if it isn't Mr. King.  My god, before you write another sentence, check this book out!  In fact, I am going to make it a mission not to blog again until I've read this page by page one more time.  I don't throw the term 'Brilliant' or 'Genius' around too often.  Heck, I think it is an overused term.  But this guy and this book, fits the bill.

Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger- If you know me, are you really surprised?  I identify with Salinger's character Holden Caulfield more than I should.  I vividly recall first reading this book when I was dirt poor and first entering the Mortgage Industry.  My parents flew me down to my Uncle's beach house in North Carolina.  For that moment in time, I was living in the lap of luxury without a dime to my name.  My mother and I went into a bookstore and I immediately gravitated towards that book.  She bought it for me and I believe I finished it in about a hour and a half...even with interruptions.  Above just identifying with Holden Caulfield, J.D. Salinger's writing style was so refreshing to me.  He seemed to write like he would speak.  I love that style.  This, by far, is my favorite read I've ever come across.

The popular thing to do at this point would be to Book Meme 3 others here on Active-Rain.  Let me just say this.  If you are reading this and feel the urge to bare your bones on some of the best books you've read...

Have at it!

Great bost....I just did this same post on 7/9/2007  I love seeing what everyone else likes to read.  See.... Life Changing Reads!!!!!! A decision for greatness - - - CHALLENGE!

I read for enjoyment, but I really like to read to have something that'll impact my life.  Let's face it...it's a long life.  I want to kick it during my entire time down here on earth.  Therefore, I really like to stay away from fiction.  I do like fiction, but I want stuff that's impactful, not just good drama.  I want stuff that makes me want to give it my all in all that I do.

I like reading about how meatheads like me made a decision one day to kick it and have never looked back.  Having said that....here's a list of my favorites and the reasons why.  I've read 100s of books in my life, but here are my top tier life changers.....and why....give me yours will you?

1)  The Bible - Recipe for life....great for any purpose, but I love the building up that comes from this book;

2)  The Traveler's Gift by Andy Andrews - This is fiction, but the story...yes the story will help you know a myriad of life changing things.  It only takes one person to make a difference and it doesn't have to be a genius either.  This is a must read;

3)  Your Best Life Now - Joel Osteen - Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full PotentialChristian bubblegum at it's best.  Too bad that some of these guys get such a bad rap.  Joel is awesome at what he does....I love his perspectives.  Whether you agree with him or not....he motivates.  Take the good and leave out the bad.

4)  Gifted Hands - Ben Carson - Front Cover  Great true story of the Top Pediatric Neurosurgeon in the world.  Raised in the projects of Detroit and how his mother, a single mother, made a decision to make her kids great.

5)  The Long Walk - Trek to freedom by Slavomir Rawicz   The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom.  This is one of the most fascinating adventure stories of all time.  An escape from concentration camp in siberia and the 1000+ mile trek down to India during world war I.  I actually cried at one part because this wasn't fiction.  You'll never complain about your lot in life again.

Tell me you agree, disagree or whatever.....give me your picks.  Just give me 1 Monster pick...I'm serious about changing my life for the better so make it a home run.  Thanks

I have a ton of others....But these are my starter books

Jason I saw you at the top of my subscribed list and got excited and sure enough, here is your post! I love the way you write, first of all! Secondly, Catcher in the Rye and Grapes of Wrath...both at different times in my life and both totally mesmerizing. And I'm going to read the 'Craft' book by King.....is it sci fi or not ? The title does not sound sci fi lol.

And btw, my favorite monthly reads are Rolling Stone magazine, cover to cover! lolol

Jason - Loved your Book Meme.  Interesting choices in books.  What we read does reveal a lot about who we are doesn't it.  Like you, I seldom read a book cover to cover and every word.  Used to think that was the only way to read.  Sure got a lot less info that way LOL

Jason.... I am like you. I haven't read a book in a while, unless Playboy counts.  Seriously.....Just a lot of blogs, mortgage magazines and other publications.   I remember Catcher in the Rye from high school. I was always a big fan of Stephen King and even some of Edgar Allen Poe's stuff. And I have heard of the Sky is Falling and I think I will check this out. It's amazing how this book meme's are taking off. What's next, movie meme's?  Best date meme's?   hhhhmmmmm  now my mind thinks.

Again, good job. And thanks for keeping me past my bedtime... lol  I told myself to go to be 30 minutes ago.

Wow - I was pleasantly surprised to see the Bible mentioned right off the bat.  I just finished reading the Bible all the way through for the first time (took awhile obviously).

I also have read most of Stephen King's stuff - Dark Tower series was a real time commitment, and although I enjoyed it I wish it had a different ending.

I pretty much have three or four books that I am reading at any given time (one in the breakfast room, one in the TV room, one in the bathroom, car, etc.).  We have thousands of books in our home and our kids have tons as well.

Here are some amazing (and awful) statistics about reading:

1/3 of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives.
42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college.
80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year.
70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years.
57 percent of new books are not read to completion.
70 percent of books published do not earn back their advance.
70 percent of the books published do not make a profit.

Thanks for doing your Meme, and I hope you can read fast.  I don't want to go on Sardi-withdrawal while you read SK.  ;o)

Hey Carole - The Stephen King book is not Sci-Fi, it is his Memoir on the craft of Writing.  Awesome read!

Marlene - Thank you, there was a lot I left out, but these for the first 5 that came to mind.

Sis - The pros & cons of creativity I suppose.

Jeff - I don't care what anybody says, Playboy is a good read!  Date Meme's?  Now that is a concept:-)

Jason - Ouch, scary stats indeed.

Sarah - When it comes to Mr. King, the way he writes, of course it will be a fast read.  And I highly recommend, 'On The Road.'

Neal - Patience is a virtue that I have a tough time with myself.

Joslyn - I hadn't heard of it either.  I think you should write one though Joslyn, or I'll edit my post and call you out:-)
