Hard Money and Self-Directed IRA's

My question is, why do we rarely read or hear anything about the Self-Directed IRA industry?  I moved my 401K from my prior employer in 1989 into a Self-Directed IRA where I can invest in private investments like private mortgages, which I personally prefer over the traditional stocks and bonds, mutual funds, etc.  There are several Self-Directed companies, like Pensco Trust Co., Equity Trust Co., Guidant Financial Group, Entrust, Sterling Trust Co. and others who only perform custodial and administrative duties, they can't advise or direct you.  Because I've worked in Private Lending since 1986 Private Mortgages are what I know and what I invest in.  Private Mortgages have allowed me to avoid the devastation that many of my family and friends have experienced in their retirement portfolios with conventional IRA investments.  I just wish there was more "talk" in the financial news about this form of investment for individual retirement accounts.  I'm not an expert in Self-Directed IRA's but have plenty of actual experience using my own self-directed IRA to invest in these non-traditional IRA investments and have worked with many clients using self-directed IRA's to protect their retirement funds.  Check out self-directed IRA's and how you can invest in real estate and mortgages for your retirement.

I know "a guy" who is hot on this an dhas offered his self directed IRA funds as hard money. I have heard pros and cons but haven't jumped in myself.

My advice would be to work through a licensed lender or broker who has plenty of experience in the business of lending making sure your mortgage is within state and federal regulations and then contact any one of the custodians and/or administrators I listed, you can find them on the internet.  Feel free to call me if you have questions.
