St. Charles, IL -- What's an American Mammoth Jackstock Donkey? Find Out May 23!

Garfield Farm Museum in St. Charles, IL will hold its 24th Annual Rare Breeds Livestock & Poultry Show on Sunday May 23 from 11am - 4pm.  This historic facility is located on Route 38 just a couple of miles west of Randall Road.

My daughter, Jenny, and I went out to Garfield Farm Museum on Saturday to see if we could get some early photos for a pre-event post. We met Deb from Lake Nowhere Mule and Donkey Farm and her darling five-month-old Eden, an American Mammoth Jackstock Donkey. Eden and Deb were out for a walk after a 10 hour trailer ride from Tennessee. Eden must have been in a pretty good mood, because she let us scratch her ears and rub her back. My Jenny learned that a girl donkey is called a Jenny and a boy donkey is called a Jack, a fact that my Jenny gleefully communicated by cell phone to her 16 year old brother named, yes, Jack.

Darn it, we don't have a photo of Eden to share because of a camera glitch, but I'll go back tomorrow and get the shots! This is a photo of Deb and one of their beautiful animals from the Lake Nowhere Mule and Donkey Farm website.

Tomorrow we'll also see some exotic chickens, birds and animals with interesting names like:

Old English Game Bantams, American Game (Roundheads), Millie Fluer D'Uccles, Blue Mottled Cochin Bantams, Shamo, Auburn Java, Icelandic, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpington, Barred Rocks, Jersey Giants, New Hampshire Reds Americauana, Cuckoo Maran, Buff Wyandotte, Silkies and the museum’s conservation flock of Black Javas.

Other fowl to be in attendance include: Red Bourbon Turkey, Rio Grande Wild Turkeys, Blue Slate Turkey, Wild Turkey, American Buff Goose, Sebastapol Geese, Pilgrim geese and a White Peacock.

A booth on American Guinea Hogs and some Red Wattle Piglets will be on hand. Sheep include: English Leicester Longwools, Katahdin, Old English Baby Doll, Romney, Merino and Clun Forest breeds. Some Nubian and Nigerian Dwarf Goats as well as the work and fiber animals, llamas and alpacas will be exhibited.

The names alone should get people out to this event!

Leslie:  I just love the name "Lake Nowhere Mule and Donkey Farm."  It honestly sounds like the place where some of the politicians down here in Texas could have come from.  We've got mules, donkeys, and more than a few jack asses.

Seriously... this event sounds like have quite a show they are going to put on... lots and lots of stuff to see.  Have fun !
