Move or Remodel

By
Real Estate Agent with Greene Realty Group

I had an interesting conversation with a fellow baby boomer at a Tour of Homes open house yesterday.  The topic is very much on many peoples' minds these days: do I remodel my home or move into a new one!  It is a tough question when you consider the expense of a major remodel.  Many of these folkes are living in a two story or split level home that means STAIRS.  There is the issue of outdated kitchens and bathrooms, 1980 carpet and small rooms that make the current home seem sad.  Or some tell me they have done some updating with fresh paint colors, new fixtures, and some minor changes in other rooms.  They are happy with the home, but there are still stairs and the yard may be getting too much to handle.

In the conversation yesterday it became clear to both of us what this lady needs to do.  Her options were a 150,000. kitchen add-on/update or a modest kitchen update to give them a few more years in their split level.  When she left, I told her that just the dialogue with a professional helped her come up with a very good solution.  I advised her to not make her home in a deteriorating neighborhood be the most expensive on the block.  She is very unlikely to get a good return on her money.  She is still thinking and still looking at new construction.  That is a good thing.

Realtors have a lot of good sound market data to back up their opinion and help you see what is truley right for you.  That may mean staying where you are for a few more years.  It may mean making the decision to move in the next few months.

Talk to us.  We are good listeners!
