Shortsales can be bank approved in a timeframe anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months.  It depends on the mortgage company and the proficiency of the listing Realtor. 

In order for a shortsale to be approved, there has to be a definite hardship being experienced by the seller.  Seller has to provide a signed hardship letter, list of monthly bills and balances, last 2 years of tax returns, last 2 paystubs, last 2 months of bank statements, additional supporting financial information, such as IRS lien documentation.  Once the bank has received the seller's financial package as well as a legitimate offer, the bank orders a broker's price opinion or appraisal.  The bank then evaluates the snapshot of the home's and seller's situation.  If the scenario falls within their acceptable percentages, the shortsale is approved, possibly after the bank makes a counter offer.  The details of the shortsale approval will be laid out in the shortsale approval letter.  A seller may be well advised to have their attorney evaluate the shortsale approval letter as well as their accountant.
