Hurricane season is upon us aka mother nature reminding us who is boss. I am by no means making light of this possible terrible disaster. Any thing I can't control knocks me for a loop but I do believe some preparation is required.
I have evacuted once and I can say I wish I had been more organized. Having all the important papers that matter to you and your family in one place or binder is imperative. From life insurance and health care power of attorney to home deed and insurance documents. Have it all in one place so you can grab it before you go. Things that you could never replace; old photos should be boxed and ready. The one time I had to leave was two months before my son's wedding I took my dress along...silly....maybe... but I never wanted to shop for that again.

Make sure you have a months worth of your medicines. Refill them as soon as a named storm is on it's way. Have a first aid kit containing sterile gloves and basic wound care. Water, canned goods, plastic tarps...all good ideas. Need more info? FEMA can help you get organized.
Five years ago when our daughter got married here in Mount Pleasant I bought hurrricane insurance for the wedding. After all the deposits and plans I was NOT letting my money be washed away.
Be prepared...not just a Boy Scout motto. Be ready!
