You Surf The Web For Real Estate, Not Walk, Skip, Trot, Ski, Skate Or Hike It.

Expressions, abbreviations, slang on line for searches for real estate, property, for anything.

How the term maine lobster fightsfor something new got hammered out, shaped, run up the flagpole, thrown against the wall and it stuck. Who actually defined the process of spending time on line, "surfing" any way?

In college in the fraternity I was in, on Friday night after a long week of classes, our cook was gone and we were on our own to grill up "gers". Some with cheese, some loaded with what else we wanted on them. Not burgers, cheeseburgers...gers. We drank "bug juice", not gaterade, punch or hi c, bug juice. Or we might head down to Pats Pizza for some "za's". Shortening up the real word that labeled something or inventing new ways of saying the same thing. To be creative, to avoid boredom I guess. Or to entertain. But as the terms were crafted, used, they stuck.

So back to surfing. The internet being like waves that pump up and down. When you throw in a search term like "cheap maine land for sale" as a property buyer, is the result like what the surf brings in? Or like riding a wave of information and some searches are bigger kahunas then others? Any searches wipe outs, you come up empty handed or wasting amazing amounts of time to find a site, blog post, video or podcast worth listening, gleaning, er "surfing?"

Was the original computer savvy person that coined the phrase "surf the web" west coast, Maine coast, island born and surfing a big part of his or her life?

Did they listen to the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the Safari's musical groups? Maine has lots of coastline, and the surf delivers, brings in interesting things to a beach from sea glass to star fish and more. Is that why surfing was like harvesting from the sea? Or the sea itself is so vast, unchartered or explored and you actually surf under a large shadow of a ton of information that comes crashing in ?

Good morning Andy, I have no idea who coined the phrase "surf the web", but like spagetti against the wall, it stuck for sure!

My cousin lives in York, ME. After looking at your picture there I couldn't help but think about his idea for a yard decoration he really wants. A pink flamingo with a lobstah riding on its back. Of course the lobstah needs a cowboy hat.

November 1990 is when in theory the internet started..why you and I are passing recycled electrons back and forth in this AR blog platform forum. Thanks Gita.

Barb, sounds like major screw up at BP and the oil spill in the gulf did not need to happen if short cuts were not taken, if the head honchos had not insisted on wrong protocol being implemented in the risky business of drilling that deep, in the ocean. These knife fighting Maine lobsters are pretty hardy but I like my seafood in real Maine butter, not soaked in crude oil.

Lobstahhhs....from downeast Maine. A yuh. You can't get there from here thinking from the crusty, sometimes crotchety Mainers along the coast, islands. Long three day weekend makes me think of steamers, Maine clams and family cookouts around lakes, along the ocean. Hope everyone has a super kick off of summer and takes time to relax, breath, enjoy the season. Andrea, get a picture of that flamingo and lobstah so we can post it. Everyone thinks Maine lobster are red. They are dark green until they slide in to the hot tub for a final frolic.

Great photo Andrew, and good question. I'll "surf the net" to see if I can find the answer.

By the way, we love Maine lobsters and on special occasions we'll have them flown to our house. There are a few companies there that excel in shipping them very fast.

Thanks Bill aka Val My Pal...do that post to where the name came from...why surf..not cruise the net. Maybe net and ocean terms to navigate although a spider web, connections seems to be my early recollections of the "net", the "web". Lobsters..or (clearing throat) LOB-stahhhhhhhs shipped in sea weed are tasty and get there quick with airlines carrying them in their holds, leaving the state every twenty minutes with some. We get them even easier being in our backyard to the Atlantic Ocean, Maine sea coast. Great job tracking down the origins too..here is the link from your blog post findings what started all this questioning!

Charles, it may be a west coast "thang"...I mean thing.

You are right Kathy...what is neat is someone in Arizona connects with a Maine real estate broker and shares is all with someone anywhere in Canada, around the world, across the US. That is reach, quick connection, an example of why to blog here at AR University. Thanks for popping in!

You're welcome Andrew. It was fun looking it up.

By the way, my name is Bill. The first name on the signature is Val Vista Lakes, etc and my name Bill Travis is last on that signature. Others have also thought Val was my name.

I write it that way because someone said that by putting the name of your company or market area (in this case a hyper-local community) first is best for the search engine spiders.
