Unexpected Visitors

Over the course of the past 5 years, I've had an unexplained phenomenon. It started in my last house, at the time we were trying to sell it. A bird came 3 days in a row and tapped on my windows. First it was the one near the piano, then the family room and kitchen. I was glad it was not a BLACK BIRD because of superstitions I had heard, I rather regarded it as my deceased grandma, letting me know she was taking care of things for me.

Now, its been 3 years since I moved to a new home, and guess who visits?

Not one, but two birds every year. Might I also add that my father-in law passed away around this time.

Once they were 2 very different species, but sat side by side in my kitchen window, undisturbed by my presence. All day they sat there facing into the house but silent and unmoved. I marveled at them and took pictures. Still the flash did not turn them away.

Last week, I awoke to a tapping on my bedroom windows. Through the sheer curtains I saw wings fluttering, were they the same two birds back again? No, brightly colored orange, parakeet sized bodies perched on the smallest rail and tapping their beaks. I went downstairs to share the news with the early risers. To my surprise, they had seen them minutes earlier taping on the den window. We marveled at the bright coloring and their bold presence. Again , they faced into the house and were not frightened when I approached them to take a picture. Throughout the day if I went into my bedroom, they would tap on those windows, and when I was in the den, there they would be. This went on for three days, always the same two birds.

What would you make of this?

Ellen - Very nice story... I too have this sort of thing happening to me but it's not birds. Since my dad passed away I inherited his very old grandfather clock which stood broken for many years. I decided to get it fixed and now runs like a charm. The only thing is every once in a while I will hear this loud knock which scares the bejeezuz out of me sometimes only because of it's sheer volume... Do you think it's sort of the same thing?

WOW, this was the biggest welcome of "Unexpexted Visiters" I've gotten on Active Rain!

I can't possible mention all your names but that doesn't  mean I haven't seen your face or your comments.

For those of you who identified the bird to me thanks, I had no idea is was a male seeking me, I must still have it! LOL

For those with feeding advice I will try to give them treats to keep them around and enjoy their beauty.

For those who have there own bird visitors, enjoy them!

And for those of you with other stories and perhaps explanations, its comforting and nice to believe!

In our current home and our last home we have had robins do the same thing - but practically fling themselves at the window. Their wings get a little muddy and they smear up the windows with the mud. The first time it happened I thought it was just a crazy or rabid bird, but after we moved to a new house and it happened again, I surmised they were trying to get in or maybe were seeing their reflection. Each time this has happened it has gone on for days at a time!

I was going to make up some huge, elaborate story about what this bird phenomenon means, but I decided not to.

Pat, thanks for sharing your story too. I'll consider the reflection as a option, but maybe I want to believe they are family spirits, looking out for me.

Coleen, yup a gift no doubt!

Shanna, I appreciate your comment.

Gorgeous birds, and yes, I agree they are Baltimore Orioles, They chose your house for reasons known only to them--but enjoy their beauty and thanks for sharing.

An acquaintance of mine lost his mother right before his wedding.  A butterfly showed up at the wedding where butterflies are not common.  He's been seeing a lone butterfly here and there ever since.  Birds are FUN, feed them and they will love you for it.

Cynthia, A butterfly that must have been beautiful, on a wedding day. I enjoy keeping them around, many birds hang out on our property. I even have chickens, but they are caged for some fresh eggs.

Your gut is right...you know what I'm talking about! So you won't think I am crazy when I tell you that a fly comes to be with my sister and I often when we are at choir practice or singing during mass. Never see flies in there any other time just when we are singing together...we know it is a sign from our Dad. He is there with us all the time. The fly will just come and land on my song book and hang there for a while. He was a professional musician and used to play his trombone at the special masses for Christmas and Easter and we would sing. I guess this is his way of being a "fly on the wall" and continue joining in with the music he loved so much!

That is a great memory to have! I could have guessed you were Catholic by your post about the "rainwater" in Sicily. The fact that you are a "practicing" Catholic is awesome. I was so surprised, after spending so much time in Italy, how many Catholic Italians don't really practice their faith on a regular basis over there. It is one thing to be catholic by name or "birth" and quite another to actually "live it". We are so blessed to be living it...and to be recieving one of lifes greatest treasures...the Blessed sacrament!
