Memorial Day - Celebrate it!

We're coming up on a long weekend... Monday is Memorial Day!  Memorial Day was established to commemorate the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the military service of our country.  For years, the tradition was to fly a flag in front of our home, and many paople visit cemetaries and memorials to honor the heroes of our armed services.

Lately, I've noticed less and less flags flown, and I haven't heard of anyone I know visiting any cemetaries for years... Is this a forgotten holiday?

And yet, I can't find one person who says, "Forget the holiday - I want to go to work today!"  when Monday rolls around.  The only ones working on Monday will be the living heroes we should be honoring - Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Guardsmen, Police, Firefighters, EMT's, Paramedics, and others for which their "office" never closes!

I toyed with the idea of a gift for my clients of a flag kit for their new home - to help them celebrate.  I haven't done this but I may in the future, especially near holidays like Memorial Day or July 4th.

I'm a little ashamed that last year, on July 4th, while driving around the neighborhood, there were only 2 flags flying of about 100+ homes.  How about you?  Do you fly the flag on Memrial Day?  Did you know it should be flown at half-staff until noon? It's not an enormous task - just walk out and put up the flag at half-staff.  Raise it to full-mast at noon.  Then take it down at dusk.  My kids like to help me put the flag up and it gives me an opportunity to teach them why we do it...

Happy Memorial Day - now raise a flag, fire up the grill, and CELEBRATE!
