Development Group Proposes World’s Tallest Building

Miapolis. It sounds like a city you’d find in a comic strip. But it won’t be fiction if one development group has its way.

The group proposes building the world’s tallest building—Miapolis--which at 3,200 feet and 160 stories would eclipse the recently-completed Burj Khalifa in Dubai .

According to the project’s Web site, Miapolis would rise on the current site of Jungle Island , a tourist attraction. Plans call for an amusement park, a trade center, an observatory, shopping areas, restaurants, 1,050 condominiums, 1 million square feet of office space, a 792-room hotel and a 300-slip marina.

Although the Miapolis Web site contains a list of respected firms said to be involved in the project, local experts question whether the massive endeavor will succeed.

“[The developer] has been trying to sell this for the past five years,” said Michael Y. Cannon, a local market analyst and executive director of Integra Realty Resources in Miami . He cited “financing, marketability of use, and whether it’s the highest and best use of the land” as challenges for the project.

“Sometimes bigger is not better,” Cannon added. “I compliment him on his dream, but maybe this is not the place to have the tallest building in the world.” Still, the Miapolis Web site is seeking investors willing to put up a “low five figure investment” for “a preferred return and an equity participation.”
