The Skill of Negotiation

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Beringer Realty

In a past, personal Real Estate transaction as a seller, our Realtor told us, "I am a fabulous negotiator."  Her comment intrigued me at the time but proved positive.  We ended up earning an extra $3000 above our "bottom line" acceptable price, due to her savvy negotiating.

Now, practicing Real Estate myself as well as coaching other business owners and professionals, I find that negotiation is not an area of great confidence for most.  I say, though, that it is a skill that should be a source of study and practice.  If our charge is to represent our client's best interests, then we had better learn to negotiate well.

Just yesterday, I had an agent tell me, "I love connecting with the clients and showing property, but I hate contracts and negotiating."  As a coach, I would love to have him as a client to lead him into a more productive and profitable business.  As an agent, I wonder what working a transaction with him would be like?

I'm sure negotiating is a problem for many. You must have an interesting job coaching other realtors.
