Imagine 37,000 Flags In Santa Fe

Santa Fe National Cemetery May 31 2010

Imagine 37,000 flags quietly greeting the sunrise over Santa Fe this morning. Perhaps you can take a walk with me for a moment at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. I went there this morning to quietly listen, meditate and pay my respects to those buried there since 1870.

The cemetery was just beginning to come to life as cars with beaming headlights filled with people entered this place on the northside of Santa Fe not far from our Historic Plaza. I walked alone thanking the graves of everyone I passed for their service and my freedoms. I watched children bring flowers and others have private conversations. I watched veterans in uniform nod to each other. I saw no barbeques or parades; only flags. What do you see on this Memorial Day?

Beautiful photo, Emily.  It evokes a mixture of feelings -- sadness for so many gone, but pride in their service and respect for their memory.

Hi Emily,

Thank you for this wonderful Photo Story and indeed all those flags give always gives me goose flesh and an overwhelming  pride. I did a tribute from our national cemetary here in San Diego and I surely do wish our grass was as green and perfect. This Fall our National Cemetery here is to do for a multi-million dollar make over to set the headstones in perfect alignment ( settleing a common occurance here in San Diego), clean them and get some new grass, I hope. But aside from all that, I have such a profound sense of pride and honor as I visit the cemetery with all the flags and the color. It simply overwhelms me the sacrifice that has been made.

I enjoyed your photo and your story, Emily.  I too would love to go alone to this cemetary with all the flags.

I enjoyed this post, even though I'm late visiting it.  I found myself walking with you... grave after grave..

What a great, peaceful, and honorable way to spend a part of Memorial Day.
