I WAS "CENSORED"!!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Fill-In-The-Blanks PDF Flyer Templates www.TurnKeyFlyers.com

I have been very active on RAIN the past few days, writing posts, responding to comments, and participating in blog discussions...

I think this community is great and I try to post very intelligent and insightful comments.

But today, I noticed a few of my comments were "missing" from a few discussions???? (scratches head)

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about deleting "spam" comments or totally irrelevant comments from discussions, but to flat out "DELETE" comments because it disagrees with your thesis or does not “push your agenda”?

There was post the other day. It was a discussion regarding if Social Media was a “dead-end” or not… it was posted by a member who was in the business of SEO for agents. [I won’t mention who this member is, since that would be tacky ;)]

It took-off that day and became very popular… even made the “featured” section.

There were at least 60+ comments within a few hours… all mixed feeling. Some thought social media was an empty road… others thought it was the greatest things since sliced bread.

So it was mixed bag which makes for GREAT discussion and debate.

I noticed today, NOW the post count was down to the 40s?? That’s weird… did 20 or so people decide to “retract” their comments???... oh, and where was my comment?? I sure don't remember removing my opinion...

This got me thinking… was I just “CENSORED?”

Did I do something wrong???

I thought I was adding to the debate and discussion, contributing to the greater intelligence, providing a form of “VALUE” to the discussion and for the RAIN community.

But today, I’ve been DELETED!!! Erased from history!!!

Then I started re-reading the comments… OMG… all the “contrary” comments and debates that I remembered were ERASED TOO!!! Where’d they go??

The only comments that remained were those that said “I agree” or “Great post” or “You are right!”…

Did this member just delete the entire contrary comments for the purpose of pushing his/her own personal/business agenda???

Hold the phone… I thought we were in AMERCIA here people… the land of FREEDOM of speech and right to freely express our positions and opinions.

Sorry, I disagreed with the thesis, but that is what makes this RAIN community so great. A well rounded discussion of pros and cons.

I’ve had my share of comments that debated my stance, but in no way shape or form was I going to “DELETE” their comment no matter how heated I was.

I just don’t think that it would be fair to the commenter. He/She really feels strongly about their opinion that they took a few minutes to add-to the discussion, so who am I say they shouldn’t have that stance by suppressing their comment???

As you can see, I’m steaming over this… and just had to rant!

But do YOU “Filter” your comments?? What’s your opinion on this???

PS: I promise I WILL NOT DELETE your comments for any reason other than “Spam” =)

Thanks for reading my rant!

I think it is kind of funny actually.  I would hope that the general public would see through it though.

I don't understand how you can say that you 'don't have the right to free speach' on someone's blog....if you didn't have that right, you wouldn't have the option of doing so!  Yeah, the page belongs to whoever it is, but having the post open to comments means you have the right of free speach....no?

I always try and get communication with my blogs so I guess if I don't like a comment it is just a persons opinion.  I enjoy feedback and many times ask a question that I want to see anwsered so I guess if it really offended the writer than delete it but, sometimes it is a discusssion that we helps us come to a better Idea.  Sorry you were deleted Reuben maybe next time think twice about who's blog you comment on.

I cannot believe anyone would delete a dissenting view point.  Those are exactly what is needed to complete a debate - especially in business.  A business should be able to overcome objections to their view point.  I often post comments that disagree with the author.  I wonder if they are being deleted....

I don't think I have ever deleted someones thoughtful comment, but then I never seem to stir up any controversy. I do support the property rights of blog owners. They can do what ever they want with it.

Hi Reuben, After reading your post here, I'd like to hear what your opinion was on the other blog. Maybe you could blog about it here.  Although it seems tacky for someone to delete comments (unless they are downright rude or the comment does not pertain at all to the subject, such as spam), in my opinion, it really is up to the person writing the blog if they choose to delete comments, or not.  I actually deleted one of my blog posts with all the comments by mistake (I know, hard to believe, but I did).  Once deleted, it's gone for good.  Personally I wouldn't delete comments just because the opinion was contrary to mine. Part of the greatness of the ActiveRain community is the dialog through the comments section of members' blogs.  Thanks for sharing.  I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Wouldn't it be great if it would show how many posts were deleted? Then if it was only 1, most people would figure it was the "odd" one, but if a high number...

Interesting.  To me - posting a blog with the ability for folks to comment means that you are...or should...be open all viewpoints.  I will delete comments that are mean spirited or just downright nasty but I refuse to delete comments from people who thoughtfully disagree.  I invite discussions from the other side of my view point.  It's how I learn.

Sorry - but to delete comments that are from a different viewpoint or just don't agree with your thoughts is wrong.

The only ones I've deleted are spam, and I had one pretty obnoxious one not too long ago, it only made her look bad not me.

wow - how tacky!  Like you (and others), I've deleted comments based on the way they've written things - being offensive or inflamatory, but never because they disagreed with the premise of my blog...

Ain't the politics of today grand.  Seems like over the last decade we more and more live in a society that individuals could care less about what they say or what others think.  In the last few years it has really accelerated to the point that many among us spew out off the wall crap that is just expected to be agreed with.  And when we don't... They sometimes just delete us.......

Contrarian opinions often allow the original poster an opportunity to refine and clarify their arguments. That only makes the blog better.

Reuben, I'm with you all the way.  Censorship ALWAYS violates our freedom of speech, maybe not by law or stated guidelines, but by the deterioration of our values and principles as a free people.
