For the urbanite with a fishing bug, be sure to check out the Fishing Pier at Elliot Bay Park. On the north end of the trail, pier 86 is where you'll find the 400 ft fishing pier which is well equipped with covered fish cleaning stations. You'll likely be in the company of a couple locals who frequent the fishing pier, who I'm sure are quite eager to let you know what's biting what on any particular day, but in case you need a need a little extra help, stop by the adjacent Bait and Tackle Shop appropriately the named the "Happy Hooker", which also serves up hot espresso and other snacks. Access to the Pier is Free, just make sure all fisherman in your party are properly licensed.
Fishing is good all year, but as with anything in Seattle, your best chance at that great weather/fishing combo is going to be June and July for Chinook and from June-October for Coho.
When you've caught and cleaned your daily limit and ready to exit the fishing pier, be sure to check out the rest of Elliot Bay Park. Heading south on trail towards downtown, you'll likely spot sea lion or two hanging out on a sunny afternoon. You'll soon come across the massive grain terminal, which is a structure I've driven by on 15th Ave W literally thousands of times and never knew what it was. I know no longer need to pretend I know what it is!
Continue on down south of the fishing Pier at Elliot Bay Park 1.2 miles(each way) of walking/bicycling path and you'll come across exercise stations, a rose garden, plenty of picnic tables, benches, restrooms and beach access. Plus the incredible views of the Space Needle, downtown and Elliot Bay have me thinking this may be a great place to avoid the crowds for great views on the 4th of July. The trail ends in Belltown at the Sculpture Park which is an additional 8.5 acres of outdoor art! From their you can head back to the return trip on the trail, or venture off to enjoy all that downtown and waterfront have to offer.
So wether your looking for an afternoon to just relax on the fishing pier enjoying the sea breeze and the views overlooking Elliot Bay to Alki and the incredible skyline or if your feeling like getting in a workout or just want to explore the your city there is something to please everyone, even your dog as long he follows the leash and scoop laws.
Your best shot at convenient (free) parking will be on the north end of the park which is closest to the fishing pier, take the Magnolia exit of 15th and stay to the left, follow the signs to parking and enjoy your day!
