Seattle Home Inspector---just horsing around a little!

By
Home Inspector with Charles Buell Inspections Inc.

In the old Wild West, lots of buildings had a hitching post with a watering trough for the horses out front.  Of course in the movies someone was always getting knocked over the rail and into the watering trough for some sobering up.

Termite feeding trough

At a recent inspection, I saw such a trough that reminded me of a scene from the Wild West----but there was no hitching post----although the fence probably would suffice----better not leave my ladder there too long.

Actually, this is no watering trough though (man those words are similar); it is a professionally built “termite feeding station.”  They are actually quite common and very popular in the NW----especially the ones like this that have no drain.  This is what they look like before they are filled with dirt and plants.  They are not nearly as effective in promoting decay or termites without the dirt----but I am sure someone will remedy that soon enough.

I especially like the wood fence divider that splits the trough in two----just to keep the good horses away from the bad horses.  It is useless however in keeping the good termites away from the bad termites.

When we educate ourselves about termites we start seeing a lot of homes were people just don't think about what they are doing.  Nice post.

Charles, there are no good termites in real estate. For some reason our office built such a trough and we had a surprise hatch in the conference room a few years later. Kinda neat, in a way.

Wow, amazing someone would go through the time and effort to do this in stone!  We don't have termites here, but we do have those lovely carpenter ants!  In my own home, they loved the grass highway leading right up to the WOODEN SHINGLES of the house provided to them and maintained by the previous owner.  The dirt and grass actually sloped up to the bottom row of shingles just to make sure they had easy passage.  It was amazing how much easier it was to keep them away once it was removed.

It appears the fence and the house are the drains for this system Charles!

Joe, I guess it is all about control :)

Robert, it is certainly an open invitation

Lori, it is a good idea to keep all kinds of things away from the house

Diane, most homes would do better if the people living in them knew more about the lifestyles of the wood munchers

Glenn, no good ones?  How can that be?:)

Kristen, the stone approach sure would make it a permanent opportunity for the bugs

Paul, exactly :)

Michael, I'll bet :)

That little termite breeding ground needs to be removed immediately upon the new homeowners moving in!

Unless of course they're planning on hitching their horse up to it!

From the looks of it, it hasn't been used as a planter (or feeding trough) in years!

Charles - DIYers often have a vision but lack the understanding of all the unintended consequences.  That's where a good home inspector can help.

I see the Eastern version of the termite breeder out here often enough. They do look spectacular when all the nice flowers are added along with the termites.

Here in Tennessee we do not like to have anything to attract the termites.  Why someone would but that so close to the house is just lack of knowledge.  The new homeowners need to have the sellers get rid at it

Joe, ahhh yes, control-----termites don't seem to be too big on control.

Jay, not both?

James, the termites appreciate the disguise.

Diane, plus you have some particularly nasty termites in your area.
