The Sovereign House Museum - Oakville, Ontario

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Centre Inc., Brokerage

The Sovereign House Museum is located in Oakville near the west harbour in historic Bronte Village.  The home was saved from a developer's wrecker's ball in 1988 and moved from it's original  location to Town of Oakville parkland overlooking Lake Ontario on West River Street.

The farm house was built in stages between 1825 and 1846 by Charles Sovereign.  Novelist Mazo de la Roche, famous for her Whiteoaks of Jalna sagas lived in the house for about five years, prior to her becoming famous.

Renovations on the house have given it the appearance of the style of the 1910 era.  The Bronte Historical Society. maintains the property and it opened up to the public in 1996. Local artists display their work in the house with shows called Art on the Bluffs.

Walking the property takes you back to a simpler time and hearing the waves and the ducks,  along the shore of Lake Ontario at the bottom of the bluff makes me want to write a novel.  Move over Mazo de la Roche.

Public Viewings: Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays from late May to late October.

Admission Cost: Donations

Hey Bruce - I like the fence too.  There was a nice gate that I got photos of also.

Jenny - It's always nice when part of Ontario's heritage is saved and can be viewed and used by the public.

Jenny,

I don't know that particular house. However, I will look for it when I'm back to Bronte.

Jenny, moving an old house like that must have been a chore. Then to rebuild all the cracks from the move, but the outside shines, and shows what used to be. Thanks for sharing

Nice to hear the Sovereign House dodged the ball Jenny. It looks like a really well maintained place. It's so picturesque. Yeah, simpler time indeed.

You said it Marc, and let's hope the generations to follow also feel the same way.

Hi Brian, It's in a great spot at the bottom of West River Street.  There is a path that will take you to Bronte Beach on the west side of Bronte Harbour.

Hi Ed, and it's nice that homes like these can be used by the community for multi purposes.

LOL John, but where do I start???

Al and Peggy, I thought it was very charming and peaceful.  Yesterday I walked around the Paletta Estate in Burlington.  Now that is opulence.  I posted photos on Flickr.  May do a post here at some point.

Hi Liz, I was just thinking about you the other day and was going to pop by your blog to see what you've been up to.  Yes, we will definitely do a face to face in August lol.  Keep me posted.

Hi Gerry, I will have to check out the art gallery and try to get some inside shots of the  house.  Happy Moose Monday.

Jenny - preserving our history and heritage is important, seeing it brought back to life must be very rewarding for those who are involved. ..... Leaskdale, here in Uxbridge, was the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery who is famous for her works such as Anne of Green Gables. There is a very active group working to preserve and restore her home and the church where her husband was the minister here in Leaskdale.
