Every Day Is A Job Interview

As I reflect on the jobs I’ve held over the years, I start laughing to myself and sometimes I lol!  I grew up on a farm in the great bluegrass state of Kentucky.  My Mom & Dad taught me how to work.  They pushed and motivated me to learn how to milk the cows, work the garden, cut grass, work in hay fields, tobacco fields and many more hard core, back breaking jobs.  I get tired thinking about some of them.  I literally milked three cows by hand each morning my junior and senior year in high school.  (I didn’t have to walk to school, 3 miles in the snow or anything like that :-) )  I moved away to college and there I worked in the dishroom, washing dishes – a pretty nasty job dealing with the stuff on the plate before washing. I also worked security detail and stocked vending machines while in college. During the summer, I worked at a fast food restaurant, a nursing home and did janitorial work. I was not afraid of work.  I’ve also served in full time Student Ministry for 20 years after college before embarking on a career in Real Estate. I recently took a position as managing broker of a new real estate company in Carrollton, Georgia.  There is a lot of work involved in merging two fully separate companies, but the benefits are worth it going forward.

As I look back on my working career, from farm boy to Real Estate broker, I realized that every day I show up to work, I’m actually interviewing for a job. For example, I’m working on the farm for my dad, but a neighbor comes over to borrow a tool or whatever and sees me working. He will keep that in mind when he needs a farm hand. The same is pretty much true of other jobs. While you’re busy working, it may seem that no one is watching, but they are. I especially think that Realtors are interviewing for a job with every listing contract or purchase and sale contract, because there  are lots of people watching that process.

The point: Show up to work every day and work hard, even when you don’t feel like it. Work with every customer and client like your being interviewed for a job.  It’s hard to find people who are not afraid to work – make sure people find you working hard!!

Keep pressing on!!

Dwayne, Great message in your blog today. It is a thing to keep in mind. Although heavy lifting is not generally requires, real estate done right takes discipline and effort.
