Northeast Georgia, Sautee, Helen are areas I have traveled for my 20 years of living here. I live in a rural area, and I love being able to watch the deer and some of the other wildlife from my house. Part of being in this area is the appreciation of nature, I think. I have fed the birds and squirrels until lately when we have had some very brazen Racoons visit. Since I also have pets I am now more careful. One the pets love to give chase to the birds and squirrels, so I don't want to set traps for the poor creatures by feeding them in the cats' easy reach. Yesterday while visiting some areas northeast of me, I was deighted to be in a neighborhood where the deer would casually cross the road in front of the car and just walk slowly over to the yard and graze on the vegetation without fear. At times like this you always hope there are visitors from the big city in the car, or better yet, prospective buyers from the big city!! But then at the next very small neighborhood, crossing right in front of us was a small or medium sized BEAR! I do know the bear was black with a brown nose. I was quite surprised to see him jump a wire fence..okay maybe jump was not the word, cross the wire fencing, and just eat his way to the far corner of the wood. He did not appear to be a baby and I saw no mother, but he obviously was accustomed to the sound of cars and did not pay attention to us. Of course I did not have my camera, and the camera on my phone would not capture him. But in 20 years of living here this is the first bear I have seen. Not sure what to hope for, and you can't tell many people where the siting was, because there will definitely be hunters in the area looking for their trophy! Have to see what the local laws are, but in a mountain area, I hope the little guy headed back up into the mountains!
