The first church officially formed in the fledgling community of Greenwood (then known as Smockstown or Greenfield) was the now Greenwood Prespbyterian Church in 1825. The second church formed was the Mt. Auburn Methodist church in 1833. In 1839 Greenwood Baptist began meeting in a grove on a nearby farm and did not erect its first building until 1844. Honey Creek United Brethren moved into its first building in 1845.
Although the Greenwood Christian Church began meeting at a farm north of Greenwood in 1838, it did not build a church until 1868, for a cost of $2400. In 1963 a new parcel was purchased for $47,500 and a new church was completed at a slightly higher cost than the original building...$181,055.
Many other churches have followed since these earliest congregations. Greenwood is now home to a variety of thriving Christian communities as well as many families of Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim faiths. Additionally, recent immigrants worship in Spanish, Korean, Tamil, and Chin bringing a diversity of language and culture to the city.
