Does Your Home Stink?

This New Orleans Real Estate Blog post focuses on odor's preventing the sale of your home.

Is it possible that the smell of your home is preventing you from selling?  I've been in a number of homes for sale here in New Orleans that have very strong odors.  Every time there is strange or bad smell it is the first thing I notice.  According to The Sense of Smell Institute, smell can affect a person's mood.

Here are a few simple tips (from Realtor Magazine):

  • Take the trash out - Never leave a full trash can during a showing.  In fact, you should consider taking out the trash every night.
  • Stop Smoking Inside - Make sure that your home is ventilated and that you do everything that you can to remove the smoke smell.  Try an ionizer.
  • Eat out for Dinner - Certain foods can stick around the house for a long time. If you know that you have a showing, think about supporting one of New Orleans' great local restaurants.
  • Clean your pets - Pet odor can prevent a buyer from really considering your house.  Clean your pet regularly, vacuum daily, and make sure you clean your pet's bedding.   Consider limiting the pet to a certain area.

I guess as a general rule that some foods can stink up a house..especially fish.  But sometimes the smell of a home cooked meal makes a place feel like home.

Darryl - The worst thing is pet smell.  I have a very sensitive nose and when I go to Open House and there is a pet smell, I can't wait to get out of there fast enough.

Or only show a stinky house when you and the buyer have major head colds. Brownie in a can if it is not trying to mask the odor of those six over flowing cat boxes can help.

I agree that smell is not be overlooked!  I showed a home this weekend that smelled like cat urine from the minute that we walked in.  The whole house was filthy!  But it ends up that I was wrong about the cat thing!  Sorry cat!  There was NO cat, but a dog that used the entire basement floor as his "potty", how gross is that!  And the listing agent wonders why it has not sold in 6 months?  I asked her if she had EVER been in the house?  Her response was "Not since I listed in it December."  Yikes!

Just my 2 cents!
