How To Insert Video Into Your Blog

Another Active Rain member asked me how to insert video into your blog. I wrote him an e-mail and realized it should be a blog post, so here is my basic explanation on how to do it. Why do I say that? Because I am not a programmer nor an expert in HTML. I learned how to do it and I am sharing it with you.
The first thing you want to do is get used to writing your blogs as a Draft. Where it says Visibility, change it
to Draft. That allows you to save your work and not publish it to the web. (It looks like you are publishing it, but you are not.)
Type up your blog and click Enter a few times to delineate where you want the video to go inside your blog post. Select Visibility: Draft and click on Post Blog Entry. Remember, that’s just what the button says, it’s actually a “Save” button. You’ll see your blog entry show up like it is on the internet, but it will say (Draft) next to it, so it is NOT).
Click Edit. Now see those tabs over your article? WYSIWYG and HTML are the tabs. If you are like me, you probably think that is some serious acronym for computer programmers. Well, it’s an acronym alright, but not serious! WYSIWYG is an acronym for What You See Is What You Get. I was grinning when I learned that one! How did I learn it? I Googled WYSIWYG, that’s how. Try it when you see an acronym like BTW or TTYL. The default tab is WYSIWYG. Click on the HTML tab.
When you click on the HTML tab, you’ll get a warning pop up window that tells you to be sure to SAVE YOUR WORK. You already did, so click on OK. That code you see is HTML or HyperText Markup Language. There are several styles of dialects for HTML. My I.T. guys prefer Dot NET, but there are others out there just like there are multiple dialects to any language. Look at all that HTML that you wrote! THAT is what makes Active Rain really cool – it does that for you! It’s like typing water into a Mexican translate program and getting agua. Can you tell I love that feature?! Don’t be afraid to scroll down through the HTML, you have saved your work. Find the spaces you put into the narrative. They will look something like this;
<p></p>
<p></p>
<p></p>Those are begin paragraph and end paragraph buttons. They could also be <br></br> which I believe is “break”. Highlight the middle one. Now go to a separate tab on your Firefox browser. (You’re not still using Internet Explorer are you??). Go to your YouTube account or other video sharing site. Find the video you want to share. It is important you have permission to share it! If it is yours, of course you do! Now click on the Share or Embed button, preferably the embed button. You will get code that you now recognize as HTML. Highlight and copy the code. Go back to your Active Rain blog and make sure the middle <p></p> is highlighed. Paste the HTML for the video there. Then you will have a paragraph break before and after the code.
Make sure the visibility is still Draft. Click on Save (post your blog entry) and you will see your video! You are going to feel like you just graduated to the next level…because you did! The video will be sitting off to the left. Sometimes you can highlight it and get it to center while you are in WYSIWYG, but don’t mess with it – it is a whole ‘nother level of HTML that I have not yet mastered. Hopefully an HTML guru will comment here on how easy that is!
Why did I say comment here, because I realized that this detailed e-mail should be a blog post, so I am going to hit send then go post it to my blog. Thanks for inspiring me to write this down!
My queston for the HTML gurus? How do I change fonts and colors? Is there a translate website for that?
Now that you know how to share video, you will carry your video camera with you as often as you carry your digital camera. I like the Flip Video a lot and am comfortable recommending it. I suppose that is a topic for another post!
