Job Picture in Southern Maryland-Calvert County and St. Mary's County -With the focus on economic recovery being tied to jobs, data from April 2010 indicates that Calvert County, Charles County, and St. Mary's County are tied for Maryland's third lowest unemployment rate at 5.7% with only Howard County and Montgomery County's being lower. While the average unemployment rate in the country is 9.9%, Maryland's unemployment rate is significantly lower at 6.9%.
The bases at NAS Pax River and Indian Head, Constellation Energy, Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, and the College of Southern Maryland provide many of the jobs that have made Southern Maryland an area experiencing economic growth at a time where so many areas of the country are in decline economically.
