Congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks!

The Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday (6/9/2010) won their first Stanley Cup since 1961 and fourth Stanley Cup of their franchise.

I watched most of the Stanley Cup Final and I wanted to congratulate them and all their fans on their championship.

Most of you know that I am a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens.  Even if my favorite team did not win the Cup this year, I am very proud of their performance in the playoff series.  Two players of the Montreal Canadiens, Michael Cammalleri and Jaroslav Halak made a name for themselves during the playoffs.

Cammalleri had the most goals in the playoffs despite not playing as many games (since the Montreal Canadiens did not make it to the final round) as the next 4 players (all playing for one of the two teams in the final) with the most goals.  Halak had the best save percentage as a goaltender and was the main reason why the Canadiens made an incredible run in the playoffs.  Here are the finalized statistics of the leaders during the 2010 NHL playoffs.

NHL 2010 Playoffs - Leaders by Categorie

Not bad for the Montreal Canadiens to have two of the top leaders in the 8 categories above!!!

Funny enough, for the Chicago fans, when they cheer their team, it is "Go Hawks Go!"  and for the Montreal fans it is "Go Habs Go!".  I will admit that I cheered for the Hawks during the final round.  After all there is only a small difference and when you replace the "wk" by a "b" in "Go Hawks Go!", you get "Go Habs Go!".   Ha Ha Ha!

Go Habs Go!

Well, today is the first Stanley Cup parade in the streets of Chicago in 49 years.  Imagine that if someone was 18 years old (a young adult just starting in the work force then) when they saw the Hawks win the cup in 1961, they are now 67 years old (most likely retired from the work force) with lots of lifetime events that happened to them in between!   A true fan of the Hawks then and now, would still remember going to the parade in 1961 and he or she will be most likely be going to today's parade in the company of their grand kids.  The following is a great article that I found online on the subject (and interesting testimonials by some long time fans of the Hawks): Blackhawks Parade Planned as Chicago Fans Revel .

OK, so this is a post for the Chicago Blackhawks. So it is fitting that I conclude by saying once more "Congratulations to the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions: Chicago Blackhawks!

Linda,

You are welcome!  I am sure it must be a great feeling right now to be in Chicago and living in Illinois.  I remember how ecstatic I was when the Montreal Canadiens won their last two cups in 1986 and 1993 and the feeling lasted for quite some time after that!

With so many teams in the NHL (30 to be exact), it is not often that a city can celebrate a Stanley Cup win (it would take place once every 30 years if all the teams were even over that period of time).  Another NHL team (Toronto Maple Leafs) comes to mind now that has not celebrated a cup in over 40 years.  Enjoy every minute of it!

Gerry, outstanding post and photos.  I really enjoyed seeing Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita at these games.  I still remember as a teenager going to the Chicago Stadium the "Madhouse on Madison" before it was rebuilt and renamed the United Center to see Hull, Mikita, Espisito...those guys were exciting to watch.

Nick,

Thank you.  The names of the players and location of the hockey arena are different, but I can relate to those great moments of watching hockey as a teenagers.  It sure leaves a lasting impression!

I really thought it was great for the Blackhawks management to bring back and include those great players and heroes from the Blackhawks past seasons (most being in the Hockey Hall of Fame) to make these celebrations even more specials for fans and people of all ages.

Dawn,

You are welcome!  It is amazing to see that hockey influences so many people and that people tend to stick with the team they cheered for as kids and teenagers for the rest of their lives even though they have moved and end up living in another city, state or province as adults.  You (Colorado Blackhawks), Nick (Alabama Blackhawks) and myself (Montana Canadiens) are all good examples of that!  :)

Steve,

It sure was an exciting final series with the outcome of most games decided in the final minutes of the 3rd period and/or overtime.
