Scottish Festival & Highland Games in Blairsville, GA

We had our calendars marked far in advance for the Blairsville Scottish Festival & Highland Games for this weekend!  Each year the Scottish Festival is started off on Friday with the Kilted Golf Classic at Butternut Creek Golf Course and the Ceilidh Dinner. Saturday and Sunday follow and are filled with the sounds of bagpipes, drums and the colorful display of flags and tartans throughout the lovely setting along the creek at Meeks Park in Blairsville, GA.

So Many Clan Tents…What is a Clan? The Gaelic word Clan means family or tribe.  Each clan has its own tartan which is worn in a kilt or scarf and members are fiercely loyal to the group. The reason for the strength of the Scottish clans can be summarized in a quote from a clansman who said, “I owe my allegiance to the land of my birth, but I am first, last, and always a…. (your Clan name).”

Highland Games…The Caber Toss: A traditional Scottish athletic Scottish Festival & Highland Games in Blairsville, GAevent where a caber, a large wooden pole similar to a telephone pole, which the athletes have to hoist up and hold from the bottom while walking briskly forward before flinging it so that it turns completely end over end.  It is said to have developed from the need to toss logs across narrow chasms to cross them. Given cabers tend to weigh about 150 pounds and be about 18 feet long, just accomplishing that is no mean feat. But this was just one of many highland games like the Sheaf Toss, Heavy Hammer and Open Stone.

We had a great day at the Blairsville Scottish Festival & Highland Games and are already looking forward to going again next year. As always, a huge thank you to the Blairsville, GA-Union County Chamber of Commerce for this event.

This looks interesting.  I have never been to a Scottish Festival or Highland games myself.

There's nothing like the sound of the pipes in a field full of the scent of open fire cooking. Glad you had fun - thanks for sharing the great photos!

Lee and Carol, I just love the sound of the bagpipes. I have a girlfriend who can belt out the Irish songs and her father (deceased now) was absolutely fun to be around esp when he started singing.

A Scottish Festival! How cool. The pictures look like a lot of fun. I'll bet the cultural aspect was wonderful too.

Lee and Carol,

Nice post. I saw the Highland Games at Stone Mountain several years ago. Also try "Observances and Celebrations" for posts like this one. :)
