The Walls Go Up On Beth's House in Maine!

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes & Gardens | The Masiello Group

Beth's house is going up! In West Paris Maine, a community has come together to fill a need of one of it's citizens.

25 year old Beth Coffin lives with spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that attacks nerves in the spinal cord and was originally not expected to live past the age of 2. The family has struggled to keep Beth comfortable and healthy in their trailer which has rotten floors and mold and mildew problems. This year they sold their property and purchased a lot more suitable for the house. Volunteers from the community have worked alongside Beth to raise $45,000 over the past year for a new home.

This weekend, the walls went up on Beth's House. Beth, her family, and the volunteers are excited to be able to see the beginnings of their efforts realized. About $25,000 more is needed to complete the home, add the finishing touches and appliances.

Thank you for the comments of support and Jay, thank you for reblogging.  The local news has been running the story as well, so we are hopeful that those who can will chip in.  So far the foundation is in, the walls and subfloor are complete as well as the roof framing.  Bath and her family are overwhelmed and excited by the community's support and involvement.

I was finally able to add the news video.

I hope they also raise enough to have a trust fund to help pay property taxes each year. We had a Habitat for Humanity home that was foreclosed on last year. The property taxes were so high that they had to get a equity loan to pay them, and then when they couldn't make the payment on the loan, they lost their house. So now they are right back where they started from and some rich investor has a nice home to flip.

Fortunately, property taxes in this area of Maine are lower than others.  Property tax rates here vary wildly depending on the town.  Your point is well taken though.  Property tax rates are one of the key thigs buyers look at here.  It can make or break the affordability of the home.
