Knock Knock
Who's There?
Bird
Bird Who
Bird Doo is what's going to happen on your front porch if you don't feed us right now!!

crow clip artFor those of you who have followed my blog, you know that I toss peanuts out to the street on a daily basis for my Crows and Blue Jays.  The Crows are territorial swooping birds that keep the pigeons off my roof.  They are also hysterical to watch, this has become a cheap source of entertainment.

Friday evening around 8:00PM I was watching a taped episode of The Good Wife.  I heard a weird sound at my front door, kind of like a knock but more like a scratchy thump.  I paused my DVR and wondered who could possibly be on my front porch this time of night.

I opened the door and there on my front lawn were three Crows.  I looked up and saw four more on the telephone wires.  OK, don't tell me a Crow just knocked on my front door.  This is crazy.  I went out to the garage to get a handful of peanuts and threw them out to the street.

I spent the next 20 minutes (and another handful of peanuts) watching mom and pop Crow break open peanuts so their offspring could eat the nuts.  Another Crow family was there as well as several Blue Jays.  Just a good 'ol feeding frenzy as I watched in amazement.

I have just one question that I wish I could ask.  How was it decided who would be the one to knock on the front door?  Did someone draw the short straw?

Hi Cynthia, I think they probably take turns knocking. They are smart. I have a bird feeder just outside my front window. When it's empty, one of them wraps on the window to let me know. Sometimes a crow, sometimes a bluejay. They sure aren't shy!

Cynthia- that is priceless.  My mom had cows who walked 9 or so miles knock on her door in the middle of the night Friday. (about 4 am)  Must be the planet alignment or something.

I had no idea they would do that!   How funny!  I love feeding birds...but my neighborhood doesn't have many trees that are mature yet so no birdfeeders here!

Great story...maybe they drew feathers instead of straws to see who would knock on the door. ;-)

Jay - OK, so now I'm wondering if the sound I heard was from my large picture window and not the front door!

Tammy - oh how funny ... the 12th was a new moon, maybe we didn't get the memo?

Ellen - I'll go and read your blog.  I guess we need to remember that glass windows are a two-way street!

Deborah - We have many mature trees including redwoods.  The birds always nest here and it's a delight to hear the young ones cry out for food right after they are hatched.

John - How funny, you're right, they drew feathers, NOT straws!!

Shirley - yes they do!  Anytime a door opens they are right there.

Barbara - I'm afraid to think about that, maybe I should buy stock in peanuts.

Cynthia, I would be a little worried. Have you ever seen the Alfred Hitchcock movie The Birds?  They can get up to some major mischief.

Cynthia....Great story.  I guess it proves that those crows are pretty smart little creatures - knocking on your door to get fed, I wonder what's next?

If you have crows knocking on your door, you might also have bats in your belfry!!!!

No! No! No! Just kidding! It's possible. Animals do funny things when food's involved. Come to think of it, I do too!!!

School House From The BirdsMalcolm - I think of The Birds quite often when the crows congregate. That movie scared me to death when I saw it at a young age.  The Birds was filmed here (Sonoma County), the school house is in a tiny town called Bodega about 25 miles from my house.  The bay scene was Bodega Bay, a short distance away.

Carra - I don't want to think what is next!

Craig - I have never seen a bat here, I don't think we have enough mosquitos for them to feed on.  Food is quite the motivator, takes one to know one!

What a fun story - we too are bird lovers and their antics never cease to amaze me!  When I get a chance I'll write a post about the birds that nested in our 'fake' plant in an alcove for 2 years or so.  Kept coming back and we had a front row seat.  Fun stuff!

I feed crows too.  They've not knocked on the door yet.  I remember walking my dogs once, and two were out.  They cawed, and I said "I'll be back in a few minutes, I've got to walk the dogs."  HA HA HA  Amazingly, when I got done with the dog walk, there were about 20 of them waiting for me.  They knock on doors AND understand English?!?

Banana - I'll look for your post, that sounds like it will be an entertaining one.

Mary Kay - oh, I never thought of it that way.  A bird blog about how entertaining we are?

Carla - I think they understand more that we think they do.  Who knew that being called a bird brain was a compliment?
