I'm Going Green!!

Green chalkboard saying I'm going green

In the midst of what is happening in the Gulf, I have been thinking A LOT more about the environment and what the future holds for our children.  I am devastated by the images of the oil spewing into the gulf and the effect this is already having on the wildlife/sea life/beaches and survival hood of those who making a living fishing in the gulf.  And I fear we haven't seen the worst of it.  I don't have a solution for the gulf, but it has me thinking more about what changes I can make locally.

Caring about the environment is not new to me - in our home we recycle anything and everything that can be recycled including clothes, books, toys, etc.  We use compact fluorescent bulbs, keep our thermostat way down in winter, and way up in the summer and one of our cars is a hybrid.  But I feel there is so much more that I (we) can do and I feel it is time to start taking the steps to do it.  I thought a good place to start would be with my job.

So the first step I am going to take is to become a GREEN designated Realtor®.  I have been thinking about doing this for awhile, and it will take a little time and commitment but I am ready to learn all I can so I can help educate and inform my clients about the benefits of home improvements that have been done or could be done in the home to make it "greener."  I truly believe that this type of living will soon become the norm not because it is the newest trend but out of necessity.

In the course of all of this, I am going to put what I learn into action as my own kitchen is in SERIOUS need of a makeover and being in this business of selling homes, I know how important it is to have an updated fabulous kitchen.  I originally thought I would just gut the kitchen and start over, but now I am thinking of maybe recycling my cabinets if I can, and adding only materials made from recycled products or those that are friendly to the earth/humans and pets.  I plan on blogging all that I learn so I can help to motivate others to think ecologically whether buying/selling or renovating their home.

So stayed tuned to learn as I learn about becoming "greener"....

Congrats, Judith, and welcome to the club!

I got my EcoBroker certification (vs. the NAR's Green Designation) last year and have, for the most part, been glad I got it.  However, you're smarter to go with the NAR designation, as it seems they have more resources available to you for networking, etc.  The EcoBroker site is rather lame and very little networking or referrals go on (as far as I can tell).

I'd get my NAR designation, but of course NAR won't accept any of the EcoBroker course credits and since I paid $325 for the EcoBroker course, I'm not going to just throw that money away.  I think NAR is being rather prudish in this respect, but what else can we expect from a "monopoly" in the industry.

I'd love to hear how the Green designation ends up working for you, so please keep us informed!

Way to go Judith. I have had my NAR Green Designation for almost 3 years and it has been an excellent choice. I am building a wonderful reputation in the South Florida community with developers and fellow realtors who are not as well versed as I am in sustainable real estate practices.

We all need to do our part. A little goes a long way. Good luck in the course you will love it !

Carlos - thanks so much for the response...I like your company name/logo and tag line.  Sustainable agents...nice!

Tim - Thanks for the heads up about EcoBroker certification versus the NAR green designation.  I am actually working on the NAR and will let you know how I make out.  Thanks!
