LOCAL EXCURSIONS FROM PORTLAND

One of the best things about being a Portlander is that that we are so very close to many so many different things!  I thought it would be helpful to those of you who were not born and raised in Oregon, to have a list of excursions that you can go to for just a day trip if you felt like it!  Some are a few hours drive each way, but they are great thigns to experience at least once in your lifetime!  So, here goes my list of "Sarah's Top 10 Local Excursions"  ~

     10.  Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm-- Found in Woodburn, Oregon, this tulip farm is clearly a seasonal visit.  Open for about a month each spring, you may wander the beauty of thousands upon thousands of tulips.  In colors so gorgeous you will not believe your eyes!  Visit www.woodenshoe.com for dates to visit, purchasing bulbs, and helpful information.

      9.  The Enchanted Forest-- Turner, Oregon boasts this fun family park.  With kiddy rides, roller coasters, a log ride, and villages; many Oregonians have experienced this fun venue.  I, personally, about had a heart attack as a child when I was feeling a bit claustrophobic in Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole.  But, other than that, it was a lot of fun and memories I will never forget with my family and our friends!  Visit their website for it's history, dates, attraction, prices, and even online store.  You will find them at www.enchantedforest.com.

      8.  The Mount Hood Railroad-- This is located in Hood River, Oregon and is a fabulous thing to bring your  children to!  There are many different rides available.  Some are 2 hours, others are 4 hours.  They offer brunches, dinners, and even special events like a Murder Mystery Train Ride.  There are special kidlet and family functions.  Although they vary some, a constant is the Polar Express train ride during the holidays.  On this ride, you get hot chocolate, cookies, hear the story of the Polar Express, wear pajamas (for kidlets), meet Santa at the North Pole with his elves, and receive your own special bell.  The train schedules and events are posted on their website @ www.mthoodrr.com.  Check it out and let me know your thoughts!

                        Mt. Hood Railroad

      7.  The Oregon Coast Aquarium-- Newport, Oregon is the home to many forms of sea life.  Once upon a time, Keiko, the whale from Free Willy resided here.  Now, the aquarium features shark encounters, jellyfish exhibits, sea birds, summer camps, and more.  Whether you want to stay for a night and explore the town of Newport, or you want to take a day trip to the aquarium, their website (www.aquarium.com) has details available for your convenience.

      6.  Portland Rock Gym-- In the heart of the cities east side, you will find this exciting rock climbing gym!  It is nearby, and full of life.  Their are classes available for varying levels of ability, making it fun for each member of the family.  you can shop their pro shop for the different tools you would use during outdoor local climbs, too.  Visit them at www.portlandrockgym.com for locations of local climbs, gym hours, admission prices, and more.  If this is new to you, do not worry, you will enjoy it!

      5.  Pittock Mansion-- The Pittock Mansion is located in Portland and is home to the turn of the century details.  At about 16,000 square feet and overlooking the city of Portland, it is a sight to behold.  Full of information, history, and a supposed ghost (I do not believe in them, myself) ~ this is an experience to go through.  Details can be found at www.pittockmansion.org

                                                                          Pittock Mansion

      4.  Multnomah Falls -- This is the 2nd highest waterfall in the United States and it is located in our "backyard"!  Cascading from Larch Mountain at 620 feet, the view and scenery are breathtaking.  It provides a good hike for those who desire the physical activity, and while you are still there you can eat at the Lodge, built in 1925.  There is a gift shop to visit as well, so bring some extra dollars or a credit card!  :-)

       Multnomah Falls  www.multnomahfallslodge.com

      3. Willamette Jet Boats -- As the name implies, Portland's own Willamette River is the spot to catch the thrill of cruising the river!  While perusing their website (www.willamettejet.com) I was able to find a lot of information about their different excursions and what to expect.  I will give you a clue, do not expect anything.  Go with an open mind and await the surprises that come.  If you see a 30 foot speed boat on the river, wave at me as you go by!  :-)

      2.   Deschutes River Rafting-- Central & Eastern Oregon have many different companies that will guide you down the white water rapids of the Deschutes River.  Even experienced guides can be shot out of the boat, so I definitely recommend finding a guide on your maiden voyage.  You will experience class 3 & 4 drops, so be prepared to get wet!  A few different websites you can visit are www.highdesertriver.com, www.riverdrifters.net, and www.oregonrafting.com.  Be safe and have FUN!!

      1.  Bonneville Hot Spring & Spas -- North Bonneville, WA hosts my personal favorite and the Hot Springs & Spas getthe top billing.  Although children are allowed at Bonneville Hot Spring & Spas, it does tend to be more of a grown up treat.    I have enjoyed many massages, mineral baths, glasses of wine and more.  So after you have done all of the other 9 things listed above, this sis a great way to relax and unwind.  You can even add scents to your bath to help promote different feelings and emotions.  What are you waiting for?  Visit www.bonnevilleresort.com

Rich ~  Thank you.  I figure if I want to be the local expert, I had better advertise not just my services, but our beautiful state and location!  Have a great day!  :-)

I enjoyed all these ideas of things to do. I personally have experienced 5 on your list. I especially liked the link to the Pittock Mansion as I would like to go there sometime. (I visited as a child and don't remember much)

Larry ~  Thanks for the note.  I appreciate your taking the time to look at it and respond.

Amy ~  Good morning!  The Pittock Mansion is something remarkable as a "grown-up".  I look forward to your update as you accomplish any of them.  Have you done the Polar Express ride?  I am hoping to do that one this year with the kids...
