Why Do I Keep All This Stuff? Decluttering For This Agent

I am downsizing my office and moving from the huge suite to the smaller, much smaller, office down the hall.  As I pack up the stuff I have accumulated over a 20 year career in real estate, I am finding out exactly why my sellers tell me, "If you only knew how hard it was to pack all that stuff away,"  "We only made 20 trips to the dump," "We took 5 truck loads of stuff to Good Will."   

OK, I'll admit it -- I like to keep stuff.  Is there a reason I have to keep a computer that hasn't been turned on in over 2 years?  Nope, it's out of here.  Those post cards that were going to make me a bunch of money---from 6 years ago.  Nope, in the recycle bin.  Remember those VHS tapes we would leave our sellers...they keep giving them back and they always say the same thing, "We didn't even watch it, but we thought you could use it on your next appointment."  I think maybe I only heard that about 5 times and then decided maybe they weren't such a good idea...but they always seemed to keep the microwave popcorn.  400 seed packets with my personal information on them...summer is here now, guess those will keep until next spring.    

This is getting easier and easier...why didn't I do this a long time ago?  I'm feeling better about my space...the new space that is.  The suite now is just overwhelming -- I'm lost in it.  Re-thinking things through, re-focusing on what is important, making sure everything has its place, including me.  I think I am going to be looking forward to another 20 years of real estate.  (Did I really just say that?)

I love decluttering, at first it seems hard to make a decision, and then it just flows.  It feels real good to simplify.

I am just changing brokers after five years, and I am not a saver, but I still had a lot of stuff to get rid of!  Been in the same home for 20 years- dread the day I move!

Craig:  It is so easy to keep all this stuff.  Hey... I bet the birds would eat those seeds.  Whaddya think.  And, in twenty more years... just think how much MORE stuff you will have salted away.  Good job cleaning out.  It's not easy.

I've been on a near-paperless quest for a while now.  It can be liberating.  I'm actually finally starting to reduce the amount of file space (and associated office space) that I need now that I'm generating much more in the way of electronic-only files.  :-)

Congrats on decluttering.  It is a painful process but necessary one.  Hopefully you can prevent the same from happening to your new office.

I held an intervention on my office a couple of months ago (finding old headshots of Al from atleast ten + years ago were good for a grin!)  Some how new stuff has started to work back in in it's place!  Also, FYI... some seeds have a shelf life, especially depending on how they are stored. Just something to keep in mind!

Oh no -- the dreaded thing called "de-cluttering!"  De-cluttering is great advise for our clients and very true that it can improve the saleability of a house.  But, I sure can get on a guilt trip after strongly encouraging this in a clients home and than coming home and looking at mine!!  I swear I try to get rid of "stuff" but it's like an illness and seems to repopulate with no noticeable difference in what was gotten rid of.  On occasions I will go on real attacks and shred and shred, give away, throw out and out and out -- the feeling of euphoria is great and like a weight is lifted!  Gosh, why do we torture ourselves like this!
