Need to charge something in the car that doesn't have a car charger?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with American Foursquare Realty RM423982

How many times have you been on the road and needed to charge something that you don't have a car charger for?  Like your electronic key?  Or one of the kid's video games?  Or your camera battery?

There is a device called a power inverter that plugs into your cigarette lighter and has a regular two-pronged outlet at the other end that allows you to run 110 volt things.  Well, not anything.  If your car air conditioner breaks and you think you'll just put a 5,000 BTU window air conditioner in, and plug it into this baby -- well, that would draw too much power . . .

I don't usually shill products or stores, but one of the Woot sites  (www.Deals, has a good deal today.  Not familiar with Woot?  Their various web sites have just one item for sale per day.  When it sells out, they're done for the day. Shipping is a flat $5 whether you buy 1, 2 or 3 of the item.

Today they have a power inverter for only $7,99.  Buy three (share them with your office mates!), and the shipped cost works out to be $9.66 each.  Not a bad deal.  See the Woot offer here!

So -- make your life a bit easier by putting a household outlet in your car.  Or just visit one of the sites -- the way they describe their products is hilarious!

The new Lexus RX does not have a cigarette lighter, in fact the 2007 did not either.    Great idea for emergencies!

Joan -- the Lexus RX does have an accessory power outlet in front center stack.  It has a cover on in instead of a lighter insert.  But it is the same thing.  I have a GX, which has not only the accessory power outlets, but a built-in power inverter that I have found invaluable!

I have a 150 watt inverter with two receptacles. I can charge my notebook computer and a cell phone at the same time. There are charts that show the power usage.  You don't want to plug in more watts than what your items will draw.  An inverter is not large or expensive.  It is a good thing to have along, just in case.

Good points, Dan!  You don't want to overload an inverter (most have a breaker that will trip).  And they are invaluable for charging computers!
