Please Don't Take Pictures of My Pictures!!

I came across something new today while taking interior pictures of a new Hemet real estate listing. The occupant noticed while I was taking pictures that some of her family photos were probably in the camera's eye. She asked if I would be using that picture online and on the listing. Of course I said I would be, not realizing what she was thinking. She promptly asked me not to use the picture with her photos in it. I then asked if it would be OK to use the photos if I blacked out her family pics, and she agreed.

I'm not complaining. I actually understand fully her apprehension. I just learned something new today and I thought I would share.

That's a good point, Todd and Devona. I liked the way you handled it--we can block out things so easily, why not? Thanks for heightening my awareness.

Good point, I try to have the family photos removed before taking my photos!

Listing is a good time to de-personalize and take down family photos anyway.  I guess I could see the point as the listing is published with an address.

Todd & Devona:  I understand fully the apprehension this seller had about having you take "pictures of her pictures."  Some cultures may get extremely upset about that... and it is not just about being a "private person."  For some, it is a cultural thing, and for some others, it may even be a spiritual thing.

Good blog. I agree with Christie. Take down most of the personal pictures during the listing anyway. Smart client for thinking of this.

Todd and Devona thank you for posting that information. It's something that most of us don't think about, if there are photos on the wall. If they are sitting on something then it's easier because we ask the clients to de-personalize the home.

In today's worlds it is unfortunate that not knowing where a picture or even a picture of a picture may end up or how it is used.

Can't blame them

Enjoy the day

Great point.....  It not only important to take quality photos but also be aware what is in the photos as well.

Great blog.  What a great why to encourage the home owner to depersonalize their home.

While I understand what has been said so far in the comments... I do NOT fully agree with depersonalizing of a seller's home to the extent that it looks sterile.

While it should not look "cluttered" with personal photos, I think that having some family photos around that show that a loving, caring family actually "lives" there... can set off the imagination of certain buyers... in a good way... and get them to thinking that they, too, could be happy in the home in question.

Lottie - Thanks! Really, I did the only thing I could think of!

Christie - I didn't like blacking out the picture, but I wasn't going to fight her on it. Its her family.

Karen - I never even thought of that. I assumed it was a security thing. Who knows either way!

Charles - Absolutely.

Val - You know, the pictures were actully just sitting there. I could've asked her to just take them down!

Don - Yep. It seems nothing is safe or sacrid these days!

Kellie - Thanks!
