Wilmington,North Carolina Ghost Walk....Where the Hunter becomes the Hunted!

Haunted Mansion in Wilmington NC

This is a great time if you are into spooky stuff and or history. We are on vacation at Carolina Beach and the other day we took the boys to Wilmington to go on one of the nightly Ghost Walks. Wilmington is full of history as it is one of North Carolina's oldest cities and being a port city it has seen all kinds of exciting events, pirates, soldiers, sailors, fishermen, adventurers.

The Ghost Walk takes you to a number of homes and sites where strange and mysterious going on have been reported. Most are sites of previous tragedy, murder, death, hanging's. You know, good family fun!

Conor, our oldest, has really been into ghosts lately as there is a ghost hunting show on Disney or Nickelodeon so to go on an actual ghost tour was going to be the highlight of the trip, or so we thought! Rory who is eight, not so much! In fact we thought long and hard about taking him as he tends to scare easy( like his dad) and we didn't want him to be having nightmares, but he said he was game and off we went.Wilmington Grave Yard

The guide Denise, dressed in a long flowing black dress started us off with the tale of the murder of an aristocratic young gentleman from the 1700's who until the advent of asphalt would remove himself from his hastily dug burial spot and the locals would constantly be filling in the hole.

Next up the beautiful Italianate Mansion where the wealthy family lost four of their children within a year or two of them being born, and a young son in his teens, the mother never recovered from the grief and when she died in her nineties she was wearing her black mourning dress which she wore every day of her life.. This stunning home is still furnished with the original furniture. The history society workers tell of finding books at the foot of the beds of the children that died, taken from the library downstairs and people have claimed to see the mother peering from her bedroom and of hearing her weep.

Next up a chilling tale of two best friends fascinated with the hereafter when one falls from his horse and ends up in a frozen stream for hours. When he is found and presumed dead, he is buried quickly...no refrigeration. That night he appears to his friend and begs to be dug up, the friend scared stiff ignores the ghostly figure .The next night the figure returns and begs again to be released from his tomb. This time the friend cannot stand it and with the help of another they dig up the grave only to find he had been buried alive and had the friend come on the first night they might have saved him.

Wilmington NC Ghost WalkOn to the old house built on the former site of the town gallows where a man who could not afford to build his mansion on the best streets of Wilmington opted instead to buy a cheap lot to build his house on. The towns people knew he was going to regret it. When Denise told us we were standing on the burial site of the many hanging victims who had no one to claim their bodies and were quickly thrown in a grave next to the gallows, that was when the ghost hunter said enough!

He had had it with ghosts, spooks, things that go bump in the night, now up to this point every picture he took had an orb, or a strange glow, a figure in the distance. He insisted I take him back to the car and there was to be no more talk of ghosts. Rory on the other hand stayed to the very end and loved every second of it and couldn't wait to get back and taunt his older brother rubbing it in Conor's face when he got into the car.

"I won" "I won" ...If only it had been a race!

Wilmington Ghost Walk....a fun thing to do when you are on vacation.
