RSS Basics for Beginners Only
I was reading a blog today that talked about RSS feeds and allowing readers to subscribe to blogs, websites, etc. I had a similar "moment" this week when I discovered something on my tool bar.
I have Mozilla installed on my computer, and there's four lines of "menu" because my tekkie kids set it up for me. I hardly ever push all the buttons, except some bookmarks that I set up myself like Facebook, Twitter, and the Weather. I'd add more, but I've already forgotton how I got those on there!
Anyway, I was looking at my computer screen, and noticed there was this little RSS feed button on my third line, and then Latest Headlines, another little RSS feed button, and Treking Hiking..., and so forth.
My "moment" was when I realized a blog site I'd just asked to subscribe to, was on this line! OHhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I thought when I had subscribed, that I would get an email. But no, when I click the little button, a whole series of headlines comes down my page in menu form, and I can click on any of them to read. It's constantly updated.
Now all of a sudden, this RSS stuff is making sense. I wondered how many of my own readers, and I am pretty sure it'd be a large percentage, even know how to subscribe to my blog? (My husband isn't even a subscriber!) Even myself, I had subscribed to several sites, and didn't even realize there was a button letalone where the button was!
So I wanted to share this RSS Basics for Beginners Only with anyone not particularly tek-savvie:
1. This little button may be on a blog or a website you are reading. If you click it, you can choose how you'd like to subscribe, and have the button attached to your taskbar menu, very discreetly. Then you can follow up, or catch up, any time you feel like stopping in again. How cool is that?!
2. This is the other little button I befriended this week. Go ahead and search for it on web sites of your friends and business associates. It's on Active Rain, usually on the right somewhere. This button will display the RSS feed for that view of the blog.
The best thing you can do is just push the buttons and see what they will do, and if you download either of them, see where the material ends up!
I realize this is very elementary, but I'm betting I'm not the only one out there that doesn't get it all yet.
If I can help someone else toward's this week AHA moment, hurray! And if you can't see it on your task bar menu, Put Your Reading Glasses on!
