Happy Birthday to me!
My husband arranged for me to be in a Fishing Tournament on my birthday. It was a beautiful day, however the winds were from the South and the seas were calm. I thought that would make a great fishing day. However, the captain (Captain Carl) said typically on days like this the fishing is not so good. I am an optimist... I knew being my birthday and my first trip to deep sea fish that I would get lucky.
We left out of Christiansted Harbor on "Mocko Jumbie" Captain Carl's boat along with three other boats headed out to FISH. There are many great fish in these Caribbean waters. Just outside Christiansted near the channel is the area where Swordfish can be caught as the water starts getting deeper. Then further out Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo and numerous other fish are found in these waters.
We looked long and hard for birds so we could turn the boat towards them and pull in some fish. We finally found some about 17 miles North of St. Croix. It WAS my lucky day, I had just climbed down from the fly bridge when we got closer to the birds. About that time, a fish hit one of the lines. Everyone told me that one was mine since it was my birthday. I didn't hesitate, I jumped right on in the chair and started reeling him in. Wow, he was a fighter. He jumped up out of the water and was blue at that time. By the time I got him to the boat he was a beautiful neon greenish yellow. Adam gaffed him and brought him aboard. He jumped around and then he was slammed into the large ice chest. WOW! I did it! I reeled in the fish all by myself. You can see the lure I caught him with, however there was a smaller silver fish that we used on that lure that attracted him.
My Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin) weighed 21.9 pounds and he was the biggest one caught out of four boats. That made me the winner of the biggest fish. We had other categories as well: one was who had the first beer of the day, who caught the most fish, who had the most fun, etc.
I am still enjoying talking to people about my biggest catch. When you are ready, book a trip down here, if anything just to go fishing! Call me and I will make sure you get on the best boat with the best captain that knows where the fish are!
