What makes a town a great place to live? Ask someone who lives in Lansdale, PA

What makes a town a great place to live?

Above all, it's the people.  Regardless of the great restaurants, fun shops, beautiful parks or ease of transportation, a town is only as good as its inhabitants.

I live in Lansdale, Pennsylvania - population 16,071 .  That may sound small, until you realize that Lansdale is a small, historic borough located in Montgomery County. A county with 750,097 inhabitants.  And that county is located in the Philadelphia suburbs - a Metropolitan Statistical Area with over 5.8 million people.

So how does little Lansdale stand out?  Well, when I walk to our Main Street, I usually run into someone I know.  The former mayor runs the hardware store.  The current mayor lives two blocks from me and is also a local business owner.  Our neighbors are our friends.  We cherish our locally owned restaurants - regardless of how quirky they are.

Our little borough hosts some of the best events around, despite its smaller size.  The annual bike night is the largest gathering of Harley enthusiasts on the east coast after the mega-huge Daytona event.  And the day after?  Our borough is spotless thanks to a parks and recreation department who truly cares.

This past Saturday was the 20th annual Fairmount Fire Company "Under the Lights Car Show."  This event takes up one mile of Main Street, and fills it with hundreds of antique and vintage cars, good food and music, and thousands of visitors.  The cars are beautiful, and the event always a great night out.  Here is a video of some of the highlights of the show.

I could go on and on about the great events we have.  But it all boils down to the great people that organize the events, and the locals and visitors who attend them.  From First Friday, to the free summer concerts at the band shell to the lunch-time concerts at the train statin plaza.

I love the Philadelphia area - and think Lansdale is one of the best places to live.

The absolute best thing about smaller towns, in my opinion, is running into people you know everywhere you go! Landsale, PA sounds like a great place!

Shannon - Champaign makes us look tiny!  Where you are, you can so quickly get to rural farmland.  We have to go a bit further.  Everything south of us is quite dense.  But just north of us is the gateway to the beautiful Pocono mountains!

Ya know, I went to school in Lancaster, PA and wanted to go to the Poconos but never made it. Maybe some day!!! I actually grew up in Salem, Virginia where the population was less than 25,000...still "big" compared to your hometown, but definitely a smaller town feel than Champaign and I do miss that!

Richard- Interesting who likes small towns and who likes big cities. It is like the country mouse and city mouse story. But I like both for their own fun and their own qualities. Yet, as I get older, Hawaii is calling me back home:) Katerina

Hi Richard, I'm from a small town too and I especially liked the summers with the festivals and parades and the local amusement park opening. Lansdale sounds like that to me. I love the antique truck in the video! Thanks, jay

Shannon - I went to college in Reading -- so am very familiar with the Lancaster area!

Katerina - sounds like a wonderful place to retire!

Jay - It's amazing how many local businesses wither have original delivery vehicles, or have re-created them.

Carla - Our Mayberry has its share of issues.  There are drugs in the area (but that seems true everywhere, now).  We have a sad, unsolved murder from five years ago -- a homeless man beaten to death by the train station.  But all in all, a good place to live with a small town feel in the center of a large metropolitan area.
