Summer in Seattle
As the first day of Summer arrived yesterday, we celebrated in Seattle with clouds and a bit of misty rain. It's been a wet and colder than usual Spring.
We call it liquid sunshine. It's bright, yet gloomy with light gray clouds.
Surprisingly, at an average of 37 inches per year, Seattle actually ranks 44 among U.S. cities in average annual rain. Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston and St. Louis outrank us.
But I think we may come in at number one for the most cloudy days. We don't experience too many downpours, just lots of misty type of rain. On the bright side, it sure makes our Spring flowers last longer.
When is Summer in Seattle? This year it seems to be taking it's sweet time.
We can almost always count on Summer in August.
And we normally get Summer weather in June OR July, but not both. This year, it will be July because it sure wasn't June!
September is always nice and makes up for the slow start.
As for the rest of the year:
October is crisp and still nice enough to hike.
November and December can be a little dreary. The temperatures are usually in the 40's ... but at least
we have the holidays to look forward to.
January shows up with a little snow sometimes, although it usually melts the same day. Recently though, we have had more snow and it seemed to stay a little longer. It's a great month to go on vacation ... somewhere tropical!
February always has a good week of warm sunshine. It's a teaser month ...
Because in March, we are back to the rain and lots of it!
And the same for April.
But by May we have bicycle weather, in between the rain showers.
One thing for sure is ... when the good Summer months are here ... there is no better place to be!
