The Great Minnesota Air Show featuring the Blue Angels - another reason to love St Cloud MN - Day 3

Blue Angels in flight by Steve Baklaich

My love of flight and planes began early, with projects like building models. For a while as an adult I persued aviation as a career and to this day I am still in awe watching maneuvers like you see in the picture above taken during their practice today at the St Cloud Airport.

My wife Liz emailed me mid-day saying there were interesting planes in the sky (we live close to the St. Cloud airport). By early afternoon I was driving toward home and catching glimpses of The Blue Angels flying around St. Cloud. After a stop, to grab the "good camera", and watch as the blue and gold F/A-18s skirted the edge of our neighborhood at low altitude, it was off to the airport.

I pulled right into the main lot and walked over to the fence and started searching for planes. The Blue Angels were parked about a 1/4 mile away, next to 2 F-22 Raptors that had flown in just this afternoon. I hope to see the Raptors fly sometime this weekend. After several minutes the PA system announced The Blue Angels were going to taxi out, and we were soon watching a full dress rehearsal, with some jaw dropping maneuvers. I began talking with two men in my little corner of heaven, and one of them was a retired F-18 pilot, Kirt Eckstrom (Captain, USN Ret.). He was the Executive Officer for one of the teams pilots at one point, Captain Eckstrom made pleasant and interesting conversation, in between loud jet action. Thanks for your service Kirt, and thanks for teaching us some cool stuff and answering my questions.

Blue Angels in the Sun by Steve BaklaichI am going back again this weekend to the Great Minnesota Air Show, even though I got to see The Blue Angels for free today, as there are several great acts I will enjoy. One area of interest for me is the World War II aircraft on display. Saturday and Sunday (26th & 27th) 11-4pm at the St. Cloud Airport, (purchase tickets) just off US 10 on the southeast side of St. Cloud. Also, since it is Granite City Days, there are other activities such as a hot air balloon rally at sunrise and 7pm at Whitney Park (Sat.), and a parade Sat. at 10am. I can't wait!

For those of you reading through my series on wonderful reasons to live in St Cloud MN, you will note that I already posted about Granite City Days from June 24 - 27, and yes, the The Great Minnesota Air Show Featuring The Blue Angels is part of the events list. But I have such a special place in my heart for flying, that I really wanted to cover the Air Show as a separate post in this blog series.

We have more planes flying around today, they are a lot quieter than the jets, one looked like an older bi-wing type of plane. I am so looking forward to seeing the show this weekend!

Steve:  Our youngest son has always been an air flight enthusiast ... so we've taken in quite a few air shows over the years.  Perhaps the most memorable was at the OshKosh fly-in in Wisconsin.  Great shows, great older planes on the ground, and Col. Chuck Yeager, my son's hero was in attendance.  So many times in this modern age, heroes don't end-up being anything near their heroic personna.  Not so with Col. Yeager.  He saw our son shyly standing off at the side of the crowd .. eyes like saucers.  Col. Yeager singled him out and brought him up to talk to him.  Asked him all sorts of questions. signed his baseball cap, and shook his hand.  John's now 26.  He was 11 @ the time of that meeting.  I don't think he's washed his hand yet ... and that cap is still showcased prominently.  What a wonderful experience it was for him.  I hope you get the chance to meet some of these heroic men at your fly-in ... enjoy the day ... and remember it forever.    Great post ...

Hi Steve -- Very cool, they come to Cleveland every year as well.  I was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Navy and used to love and watch them land, especially in the middle of the Indian Ocean at 2am on a moonless, completely dark night by the lights that told them if they were too low, right on, left/right, too high, and feel the thud.  I could hear the scraping of the arresting wire along the flight deck.  Amazing feats of skill, dedication, and nerves of steel, let along the technology.  Trying to make a controlled crash on a deck in pitch dark in the middle of nowhere takes a whole lotta **&&^.

Steve...

I am very proud that my cousin is a member of the Blue Angels! It is an honor awarded to very few.

Sharon: This is the inaugural Great Minnesota Air Show, so if you make it up here some year to see this show you should let me know, I am always happy to meet up with other aviation enthusiasts.

Anna: It is really fun to find on occasion how connected we all are. I am going tomorrow, and I hope that the weather clears up as it is raining now, but it was clear earlier today for the show. I am sure that Mary had a great time and I know we will too.

Gene: I have always wanted to go to the Oshkosh show and I have never made it. What a bonus for your son to get to go to Oshkosh and to get to meet Col Yeager, who is one of my heroes as well. The stories I have heard of how he treats others are a clear testament to a great man. I would love to talk to him about flying the P-51 during WWII and many more things.

Chris: Your experience sounds like the stories my Navy friends have shared with me. Kirk, the guy I met at the airport the other day, was clearly addicted to that life. The teamwork involved in everything you do on a carrier is amazing. I am sure it stayed with you as well.

Richard: Please send your cousin a message from my wife and I. We are very proud, and very grateful, for the service of your cousin and all who serve in uniform. ( And ask him if he can get me a ride on the #7 plane!)

The comments and stories are wonderful. Thank you!
