Thanks for all the comments. These toadstool rings are quite rare as circumstances need to be just right.

We have had lots of rain, and obviously, a toadstool group must have spread spores in a ring previously.

 We like to think it a a magical occurence - must be why they are called " fairy rings"

I have never seen one before but have heard about them.
