Interesting facts you would not hear from the Firework Industry

As the 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays, I was easily lured into reading an article, in the June edition of Smart Money Magazine, about the ten things the fireworks industry won't disclose to the general public. Many, myself included, thought that fireworks were relatively ‘new' in terms of history, but I was surprised to find out that fireworks have been associated with Independence Day since July 4th, 1776!

Here are other fireworks facts I found interesting and wanted to share:

• Firework displays have shortened in the recent years, mainly due to the expense. Some of the largest of shows can cost upwards of $500,000.

• Did you know that many fireworks contain a salt called per chlorate? This is salt could potentially impair cognitive and physical development in fetuses and infants, and also drinking water. This aspect concerned me, especially seeing that so many firework shows take place over lakes.

• Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to take a GOOD picture of a firework display? As it turns out, it may be a waste of time as the burst of the shell is so fast, that it is difficult to capture even if you have amazing reflexes.

• During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the world was stunned to find out that the elaborate display of fireworks during the opening ceremonies were digitally imaged. Many studios in Hollywood and across the country are choosing this alternative to conserve resources.

• Fireworks do kill and injure people annually. In 2007, there were eleven reported deaths and 9,800 injuries that occurred in the United States alone.

• We don't have to wait until the 4th of July to take in a spectacular fireworks show.  Disney has been coordinating fireworks shows since the 1950s, and more and more people are using fireworks to end their wedding receptions, as well as incorporate into concerts.

With these thoughts in mind, I wish you a safe and Happy 4th of July!

Some very interesting facts indeed, Heather.  It is surprising how many people are injured each year.  They are dangerous and people need to remember that.  Thanks for the reminder.
