The other day I read a post regarding Soci@l a e-book by Ben Kinneys. There was an invitation to download this e-book for free and when I went to download it I received a message saying that the file was damage and could not be downloaded.
Now I am not as savvy as some of AR members nor do I speak computer geek, when it comes to knowing about uploading and downloading files, so I decided to look into this matter and find out what is the difference between the two.
Uploading usually refers to copying files from a smaller peripheral system to a larger central system. For example, a user might upload files from his or her cellphone to a personal computer. These files in turn might be uploaded again to a central server. The uploading of small files might take only a few seconds, while larger graphic-heavy files could take hours.
Downloading refers to the transfer of data from a central system to a smaller system. For example, the same files uploaded to the server above might be downloaded for viewing by another user. When downloading files, the larger the file, the more time it takes to complete the transfer, just as is in uploading. Downloaded files usually remain on the server unless the user specifies otherwise, meaning that others can access the information.
Classic example is email --- it is downloaded from a server and your replies are uploaded.
