Live Life to the Fullest. Don't Let Fear Hold You Back!

Live Your Life to the Fullest. Don't Let Fear Steal Your Destiny

strong rushing water-US Dept of Fish and WildlifeA little while ago I was reading a post by Jeff Dowler titled "Make Mistakes, and Make Mistakes Often". I highly recommend you read his post! (You may have to scroll down to his post since it's for members only. My link is to his blog.)

As I contemplated, and commented on Jeff's post, I decided to expound on it with this post. And I made this decision because of a personal decision and commitment to which I've held myself for as long as I can remember.

In my comment to Jeff, I stated... "It's amazing how many lessons we learn from our mistakes, although they can be quite embarrassing or painful sometimes. But I guess that's why they leave such a large impression."

In Jeff's post, he addressed how sometimes people will hold themselves back from doing new things, because of a perfectionist nature. (Again, you need to read his post to get the full effect of this.) So my comment continued as such... "Ironically, I tend to be a perfectionist, but am generally not afraid to try new things. I've made it a rule in my life, that if I'm considering doing something, if I feel any fear about doing it, (unless it's a healthy fear), I will force myself to do it. I don't ever want to look back and wish I had done something, knowing the only reason I didn't do it was because of fear."

Why do we fear failure so much? (Pride? Ego?) I believe that especially in the nature of real estate professionals, being in such a competitive field, many of us tend to have this perfectionist nature. And we want to be the best at what we do! But it takes practice and even failure to achieve our personal best. AND, life requires balance. It's not ALL about real estate! (If it is, you need to expand your thinking and discover the many other areas in which you can excel.)

The final part of my comment on Jeff's post was "A life filled with regrets because of missing out on things would really suck!" And that is the reason for this post. Live your life to the fullest. I believe that every one of us has hidden potential locked inside. We are capable of so much more than we even know! So don't let fear hold you back.

  • Try new things
  • Spend time contemplating, meditating and praying to uncover the hidden potential that's locked inside you.
  • When the going gets tough, consider this. Before we can "grow" to the next level in our lives, we have to be prepared for whatever is coming. You must pass a "test" before you can advance. (God is the expert at putting us through this one!)
  • Try to "humble yourself", to learn and endure and experience as much as you can from your difficulties. Therein lies the key to your hidden potential.

What fears are holding you back? Have you heard the definition of fear? It's False Evidence Appearing Real. So Activate Your Faith! ...Now what exciting new things are you going to do? Go for it! And you won't look back at your life, and regret the wonderful things you may have missed when you got stuck in one place because you were afraid to move.

Consider this: When water stands still, it becomes stagnant and starts to stink! But moving water is a powerful force. It has a destination. And it pushes obstacles out of it's way. It even erodes away things that are much stronger than itself. (Maybe you need to "erode" some wrong thinking?) WE are like water. We can stand still and become stagnant and stinky (stuck in a rut and headed for failure). Or we can focus on our destination and continue moving forward; all the while finding new paths around the obstacles, and eventually eroding those obstacles out of our way as we push past them.

Consider a rushing stream, or raging rapids, or the power of a waterfall, or all the life that's found hidden beneath the surface of a river. And have a fearless day! <--Fearless REALTOR®

Randy- Ironically, I've been reading a book called :Breaking Intimidation". It's not exactly like it sounds since it's a Christian book. But it fully addresses fear and pushes the reader right past it =)

Barbara- There's a similar passage in the bible, but I'm too tired to look it up right now since I couldn't sleep last night x_x   But I like your quote too.  =)

Corie- Thanks! This is my usual attitude, even if I don't blog it. But I've had to address some other issues recently (without fear)  ;-)   Now it's back to blogging as usual... I hope...

Some great thoughts here!  And I agree that it always seemed to me that the saddest thing of all would be to look back over my  life and regret that I was too afraid to do things I wanted to do.

Hi Lisa

When you let go of fear (except of a healthy fear of things that could likely kill you), it's amazing how the whole world opens before you. There are SO many possibilities, SO many dreams to explore!

I think one of the toughest things is when the fear comes from being pressured by others to do something, or not do something, based upon intimidation or harassment.

I am actually facing that right now.

And at moments like that it is IMPERATIVE to take a good look inside yourself and figure out who you are, and whose you are....and who you ultimately report to.  Because most times the right thing to do is not the popular thing to do.

Only by looking inside yourself and determining what is most important to be right or to be popular....will guide your course in life.

Thanks for the great post.

What a good post this is. Congratulations on feature. A deserving one. By the way, it is not about real estate, so I guess this is to some extend is the answer to your post about feature posts.

They have the right to be featured, IMO

Surprise, surprise. I just logged in and found a feature. I'm glad I was able to help. We all need encouragement sometimes.

Jon- In relation to my recent post about features, my comparison list of past and present features was not about posts needing to be real estate related. Encouragement was on my list of the past posts that I've been missing.

Not letting fear hold you back would allow a person to experience a lot more things in life.  I know there are ways I could improve my life if I didn't let fear hold me back.

Fear in itself is an emotion that's protecting you: so that you can run away / escape from a trouble. But this protectiveness might take strange shapes: fear of failure, or of being laughed at, or called incomepetent etc.

Mainly, things still go back to the childhood. When a 2 y.o. sees a cookie on a table, s/he doesn't think "can I have it?" or "is it possible to have it?" not to mention "Am I worthy taking and eating it?" A 2 year old stretches her arm to get it, pushes a chair to the table and climbs upon etc. Now when / if she falls down, or parent comes and gets angry with her - that's when fear is born, to protect her from bruises and falls and scolding...

Let's keep in mind how brave we were as 2 year olds, and rock on with all the wisdom we gathered along the way to our present age...

MJ- That's a good one! =)

Karen- I've encountered many fears in my life. This is why I force myself past them. I told my mom this, and she couldn't fathom my philosophy.

Christine- Me too. Sometimes it takes a strong act of will for me to force myself past the fear.

Anna- That's a lot to take in...  Some of these comments are making me have to think really hard! lol

Excellent thoughts! Brings to mind the old "all we have to fear is fear itself" speech. Fear of failure has stopped many from accomplishing great things. Thanks.  BTW, I like Anna's 2 year old comparison...maybe I will act like a 2 year old today!
