Hands across the Sand on Fort Myers Beach !

Hands across the Sand on Fort Myers Beach !   By now you have heard of the planned demonstrations of solidarity over the BP oil spill and it's effect on Florida Beaches.  By all accounts and reports our piece of the coastline wiil escape the ravages of the spill.  Never the less, hundreds, if not thousands, turned out today at noon to show our concern and frustration over the spill whereever it may make landfall !

Traffic coming over the bridge to the island started early and parking was a little hard to find.  Once there it was a short walk to the waters' edge.  The Gulf of Mexico is relatively shallow and a very gradual slope.  People were starting to line the shoreline starting about 11:30.  Just another beautiful day at the beach except these folks were upset about the ( remote ) possibility that oil sludge might make it to our pristine shores.  Being here and making our presence known just might make a difference.  Maybe say to those well north of us that we understand the devastating effects of drilling without responsible oversight.  This family came to the beach to make their concerns known !

We're mad as hell ...Other signs were evident and the oil spill was topic number one among those gathering along this stretch of Fort Myers Beach.

Hands across the Sand on Fort Myers Beach !

We are lucky that our world famous beach is as yet untouched by the oil !   All accounts tell us that the Gulf currents will keep it away from our shores.  You wouldn't wish an oil spill on anyone but we sure are glad it doesn't appear to be headed this way !  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragedy !

The total disaster of this oil spill is of epic proportions with the devastation it is leaving in its wake.  Humans, animals and on and on.  Even more boggling to me is the disaster and lack of leadership and clean up efforts plus refusing outside assistance.  Sounds awfully political to me rather than humantarian.

Many years ago when I lived in Miami (during the Cuban crisis tells how long ago) I often would visit the beautiful beaches in Fort Myers.  I always enjoyed the Golf side beaches.  It looks like the folks had a beautiful, pristine day to join hands across the sand in support of all the beaches already ruined by this gushing/spewing oil.  Hopefully your beaches are spared.

Hi Sue,  I can't help but think that much of this disaster is yet to be known to us.  All that dispersant, etc has yet to make itself known.  Take care !

We are watching the news...across the miles...across oceans...and understand fully everyones frustrations with this spill.  I am so heartbroken watching what's happening to the ocean, the wildlife and shores due to this mess.  Getting involved is what makes things happen to get things "fixed".. Let's see if they hold true to their word....because it's going to take MANY years for this to turn around....

That's a moving picture to see everyone holding hands along the beach.  I'm so glad to hear the oil spill won't be touching your shores.  I hope that the mess can be cleaned up and that we can learn how to keep this from ever happening again.  Our beautiful coast line is precious!

Hi Sally,  It doesn't matter how far removed we may be from this disaster.  Thanks for your thoughts and support !

Hi Melanie,  Everyone believes our area will be spared from this tragedy but all of us can appreciate the magnitude of the problem !

Hi Jane,  The bad news just seems to keep coming.  BP also seems clueless as to what they need to be doing !

Hi Penny,  Thanks for stopping by and commenting.  Concerned people up and down our coastal beaches are watching the advance of the spill.  We are lucky that the oil is not supposed to come anywhere near our shores but we are still shocked by this disaster !

Bill Gillhespy Fort Myers Beach Realtor (Century 21 Tripower Realty):  Here is what is really frightening about this whole thing, Bill.

Judging by how many people are involved and the entire lack of result-oriented response, I don't get the impression that BP did anything different than any of the other oil companies.  It seems very likely that the same thing could happen to any other oil company, and we would be just as clueless how to handle that tragedy.  Otherwise, someone somewhere would have handled it by now.

Let's just hope that what I just wrote isn't truly tested (via another pollution blasting explosion).

Your pictures of the beach look lovely.  We have beautiful beaches in Michigan, especially along the western Lake Michigan shore, but we don't have that awesome looking white sand here.

Hi Chris,  I'm also concerned about tthat 1.1 million gallons of toxic dispersant out there.  perfect example of what happens when those charged with oversight forget who they are working for !
