Garden Island Newspaper article
This week the Kauai Planning Commission approved Safeway's request to build Lihue's Hokulei Village shopping plaza in 2 phases insteat of one. The economic slowdown had made finding tenants for the complete project difficult.
According to today's Garden Island newspaper, Phase I will include a 2nd Safeway supermarket on the island, another major store (not named), 4 restaurants, 2 shopping complexes, a bank and a gas station. While we love our local owned and operated grocerers, some food items can not be purchased there so the Safeway will be a welcome addition to many. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2012. Road improvements currently underway on Kaumuali‘i Highway, though not directly attributed to this project, will aid traffic flow in the area.
Aloha!
